There are two things that I miss as an Irish expat. (1) Not having Halloween as a public holiday. Yes that's right, fourteen years on and I'm still bitter. (2) Barm Brack. Fruity tea bread with hidden treasures inside, reminiscent of Christmas Pudding Charms (although a Christmas pudding never held a holy medallion to signify that you might go into a convent or seminary).
One of my earliest memories is playing in our family's commercial bakery and finding the huge box of 'gold' rings - one of which went into every tin to signify that the finder would be married within the year.
