The windy resort of Lough Erne in Northern Ireland this week must have felt far from the millions of Syrians whose lives have been ripped apart by conflict. Yet many of the G8 leaders meeting there have seen the human impact for themselves.

The Digital Diplomat

+Tom Fletcher is known as The Digital Diplomat. This is a fascinating part of the session as +Lara Setrakian asks the Ambassador about his use of social media. What follows is an invaluable insight (clip should start at 26:12) ..

Nasrin Sotoudeh, the Iranian human rights defender imprisoned in Iran.

"I am deeply concerned for the well being of Nasrin Sotoudeh, the Iranian human rights defender imprisoned in Iran.

"Last week, she was a worthy winner of the European Parliament’s Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. I understand that she is on hunger strike in protest at the harassment of her family by the Iranian regime.

"I urge the Iranian authorities to cease the activities that have led Nasrin Soutoudeh to take this drastic step and to review her case and the baseless charges against her."

Sahtein all. A quick question: Where do EDL stands on Prime Minster Hariri’s commitment to increase Lebanon’s installed capacity from Renewable Energy by 12% by 2020?

The stability of Middle East has been damaged by the worst intervention of US and their worse dictatorship. So how to keep them away from Middle East is the most important & fundamental issue.

Congratulations on a fine Hangout today, +Tom Fletcher . It was informative and you came across great, of course. I would like to see more diplomats adopting the #DigitalDiplomacy format.

I know of one instance where a commander was criticized for using too much camera time. He was, however as it came out, very consciously using the public media to communicate with his opponent.

That's necessarily not new but with this digital Hangout technology, combined with the ability to forward the You Tube video, could this become a new diplomatic channel? Or not.

Any thoughts +Tom Fletcher ?
