June 4, 2015    Thursday, 3-4 PM CDT (UTC-5:00)

Ellen S Deutsch, MD, MS, FACS, FAAP
Medical Director, Pennsylvania Patient Safety Authority

Abstract
Healthcare simulation can be used to improve the skills of individuals and the function of teams, but the quality of healthcare delivery is also impacted, and sometimes limited, by the complex systems in which healthcare is delivered.  Simulation can be used to identify, understand and improve the processes and systems which support – or constrain – healthcare delivery.

How can we use case-based inter-professional simulation to improve healthcare systems?  What is the value of in situ simulation?  This presentation will touch on how simulation can be applied in the context of Safety I and Safety II, explore “Work as Imagined” versus “Work as Done” and discuss simulation applications related to theories of resilient systems.

Dr. Deutsch serves as the Medical Director of the Pennsylvania Patient Safety Authority, with responsibility for analysis and education based on the data in the Pennsylvania Patient Safety Report System (PA-PSRS), as well the Editor of the quarterly peer-reviewed patient safety journal, the Pennsylvania Patient Safety Advisory.

Dr. Deutsch practiced as a Pediatric Otolaryngologist in the Philadelphia region for 20 years before being recruited to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) as the Director of Peri-Operative Simulation and Simulation and Systems Integration for the Center for Simulation, Advanced Education and Innovation.  She has successfully developed innovative educational programs which leverage emerging technologies to improve technical skill, medical judgment, team behaviors, patient safety healthcare quality, resilience, and systems of care delivery.  Dr. Deutsch completed a Masters in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety in June, 2014 and joined the ECRI Institute in September, 2014 as the Medical Director of the Pennsylvania Patient Safety Authority.

Dr. Deutsch serves in leadership roles in national and international organizations.  She has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed manuscripts and 20 chapters, created numerous workshops, courses and alternative media presentations, and delivered more than 100 invited lectures at local, regional, national and international meetings.

Ellen Deutsch received her MD degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, followed by a Residency in Otolaryngology at the University of Maryland, and a Fellowship in Pediatric Otolaryngology at the Children’s National Medical Center; she received her Masters degree in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety from Northwestern University.

This is so cool. That little twist along the east coast of the US is the area of low pressure causing the snow storm we are experiencing right now.

In celebration of their 100-year anniversary, the American Film Institute selected the 100 most memorable quotes from American cinema, and a few years ago, for kicks and giggles, I put the first eight quotes into chart form. I planned to chartify all 100, but I got distracted.

This was the best old fashioned miniature golf course! So sad that it is no longer here. Now there is a ropes course in its place.

The BEST sushi in the Lehigh Valley by far. It is always fresh and flavorful. I have tried many other places in the area and none are as good. I always end up wishing I had gone to Hana Sushi instead of wasting my time and money at a different place.
