Hi folks! This year's Game Chef got a bit delayed due to some turnover in the leadership. I have agreed to step in as interim Global Coordinator, and as such I am pleased to announce that this year's Game Chef will run from August 17 to 26.

Since we're getting a late start, I have an important favor to ask of all of you experienced chefs: help get the word out! Please share the info on Game Chef with any game communities you are part of.

I would also ESPECIALLY like to ask you to reach out PERSONALLY to one person who is interested in games but who has never designed a game before. (Bonus points if it's a person from a group that has been underrepresented in game design -- woman or nonbinary, person of color, etc). Game Chef is a great way to dip your toes into game design, and the community here is very supportive. But sometimes people need that personal nudge to believe that designing a game is something they can really do.

Thanks, and I look forward to seeing all of your great games next month!

Schmid is a leading researcher of language attrition, a growing field of research that looks at what makes us lose our mother tongue. In children, the phenomenon is somewhat easier to explain since their brains are generally more flexible and adaptable. Until the age of about 12, a person’s language skills are relatively vulnerable to change. Studies on international adoptees have found that even nine-year-olds can almost completely forget their first language when they are removed from their country of birth.

FTA: As for the armchair grammarians: it is time to give attacks on the (mostly blameless) passive voice a rest. If critics want to decry shoddy headlines, the internet has offered alternative culprits: “evasive voice” goes well with “active” and “passive”. But since this is not really a feature of grammar at all, consider another popular suggestion—“weasel voice”.
