From May 26 - September 4, Antler Hill Village is hosting "Vanderbilt Travels Railway," a model train display highlighting George Vanderbilt’s travels with handcrafted architectural elements made from leaves, twigs, and other natural materials.

William Henry Vanderbilt, born in 1821, was one of three sons and eight daughters of Cornelius “Commodore” Vanderbilt.

Although he was destined to follow in the Commodore’s business footsteps, William Henry would eventually share his passion for collecting art with his youngest son George Vanderbilt.

Gifford Pinchot demonstrated for the first time in the United States that scientific forest management could be profitable and was, thus, good business practice.

Another “first” in forestry occurred here in 1898 when the first forestry school in the United States was opened, the Biltmore Forest School, headed by Dr. Carl A. Schenck. Nearly 87,000 acres of the estate’s forest land in now included in the Pisgah National Forest.
