"When we focus on whether the police acted lawfully, we are missing the chance to ask whether they acted appropriately."
As the video of Sandra Bland’s arrest makes its way into homes and offices around the country, people are aghast that the failure to use a turn signal led to a woman’s arrest and, ultimately, her death by what officials have identified as suicide. People want to know if the officer’s actions—asking that Bland put out her cigarette and demanding that she step out of her car—were legal. But that’s the wrong question. Instead, we should be asking wh...

Why do poor people make stupid, illogical decisions to buy status symbols? For the same reason all but only the most wealthy buy status symbols, I suppose. We want to belong. And, not just for the psychic rewards, but belonging to one group at the right time can mean the difference between unemployment and employment, a good job as opposed to a bad job, housing or a shelter, and so on.
We hates us some poor people. First, they insist on being poor when it is so easy to not be poor. They do things like buy expensive designer belts and $2500 luxury handbags. I totally get that it's horrible and illegal to profile people. But still #SMFH over a not-filthy-rich person spending $2,500 on a handbag.— Errol Louis (@errollouis) October 29, 2013

To be fair, this isn't about Errol Louis. His is a belief held by many people, includ...

Basically, yes, multiple studies have said that people who are poor make poor fiscal decisions. In aggregate, the studies haven't said that the decisions drive the poverty, rather that all people, even those who are ordinarily affluent, tend to make poor decisions when they are suddenly rendered poor (even when it's in a game and they know it's a game).

Starting Jan. 1, nearly five million people who were supposed to be covered under Obamacare won't be because their states have refused to expand Medicaid.

My state, North Carolina is among them. They closed at least one hospital because the people who lived there are poor. Hospital costs are out of this world and just a few tests and short stay WITH insurance can be in the tens of thousands of dollars.
I believe doctors are now performing unnecessary tests just for the insurance-for the people who have insurance. Now, practicing medicine is a BUSINESS. That is sad.
As I have always said, Healthcare is a human right, NOT a privilege.
