Solve for X 2014: Celebrating and accelerating moonshot pioneers

Last week, Solve for X gathered 60 entrepreneurs and scientists from around the world to discuss 18 moonshot proposals—world-changing projects that work to address a huge problem, suggest a radical solution and use some form of breakthrough technology to make it work.

For more information about the speakers, the technology and the moonshots, check out the Google blog here:  http://goo.gl/gxmu7s

We'll be exploring the speakers and their #TechMoonshots in more depth over the next few weeks, so stay tuned!

cool!

I've recently been working on a project to train very large neural networks with a bunch of colleagues.  In addition to building infrastructure to train very large networks, we've been working to apply them to various application domains.  As part of that work, we've been collaborating with +Vincent Vanhoucke and other members of the speech team at Google to use deep networks in speech recognition.   The blog post linked below gives some details about the system.

When you use the voice recognition on your Android phone, you're using the results of this collaboration.

We're also applying these networks to other application domains, like image recognition, language modeling and machine translation.  You can read more about our use of these kinds of networks for image recognition here:

One reason air travel is so much faster than ground travel is the simple fact of air resistance; airplanes can travel faster because there is simply less air at their cruising altitudes to slow them down.

What if we could bring the advantages of traveling at high altitudes down to transportations systems on earth, and build a ground travel system with no air resistance? That is the idea behind Evacuated Tube Transport. The Evacuated Tube Transport system can theoretically reach speeds of up to 4,000 mph, allowing passengers to get from New York to Beijing in just 2 hours.

It’s a compelling idea, so much so that Gizmag recently ran a story (http://goo.gl/wrLrh) that explains the technology and its advantages, in addition to examining the largest hurdles in the way of making this vision a reality. Also take a look at this Fast Company article (http://goo.gl/OSAEO) that reviews other out-there transportation ideas.

Evacuated Tube Transport, or any of these other audacious transportation ideas (The Hyperloop, Urban Mole, The Matternet) may or may not describe the future of transportation... but we salute this type of bold thinking and imagination; after all, it's the only way to get big things done!
