APRIL SHOWERS BRING MAY FLOWERS BUT....

Is it legal and helpful to drive using your hazards (emergency flashing lights) during heavy rain?
The legality of using hazards during heavy rain varies from state to state. It is not permitted in 12 states. In Pennsylvania it is allowed in MOST cases!

In poor conditions, drivers think that this helps others see them, but hazards actually making it harder and more dangerous for those around you. While your hazards are on, it is extremely difficult to tell if you are using your turn signal, brakes, or even pulling over. In some cars, turn signals are disabled when the hazards are turned on. Instead, turn on your low beams (high beams can cause glare in rain, snow, and fog).

Hazard light are meant as a warning to other cars that you are pulled over, stopped, and need assistance. In PA, you are free to drive with your hazards as you see fit. Some states permit it if there's an emergency or a hazard on the road that you want to make other drivers aware of. In all states, hazards are permitted during funeral processions.

Happy and SAFE driving!

Wiping Away Winter
This winter has been a tough one for everyone!

Wintertime is also tough on wiper blades. Wiper blades can be damaged from ice and snow and when owners try to detach frozen wipers from their windshield.

Although most people wouldn't consider windshield wipers a vehicle safety item, they certainly are, especially with springtime showers occur and visibility is a must!

The recommended replacement interval for wiper blades is every 6 months, but how often they are replaced is often determined by operation conditions and wiper blade quality.

Here are some common signs your wiper blades need to be replaced:

1. Blades Have Damaged or Chipped Rubber
2.Squeaking or Chattering Blades During Use
3. Blades Aren't Making Full Contact With the Windshield
4. Blades Cause Streaks or Smears When in Use
5. Bent Frames

Remember Safety First....
Are your wiper blades in need of replacement?

3 Reasons Why Paying More for Tires Can Save You Money

You get what you pay for when buying cheap tires. Lower quality will be cheaper. They will not last as long. They often do not come with a warranty of longer than a few months. Overall, it is worth the extra money to go with a mid-grade tire.

Cheaper tires don't always mean cheaper installation costs
More expensive tires often offer better fuel efficiency
More expensive tires last longer, which means you won't have to replace them as often.

Cold Weather From This Past Winter Was Brutal On Car
Batteries
Have the battery & charging system checked for optimum
performance.

The average life of a battery is 2-5 years, but a shorten battery lifespan can be from driving conditions, lack of care, and weather.

The cooler the ambient temperature (below 80 degrees F), the more energy is required from the battery in order to start a vehicle's engine. Plus, colder temperatures such as this past winter result in a reduction of the battery's reharge efficiency.

Here is a list of signs that your battery may be ready to die:

1) Your vehicle cranks slowly when trying to start.
2) You hear a grinding, clicking or buzzing when you turn the ignition on.
3) Your vehicle has previously stalled.
4) Your headlights dim when you are idling brighten when you rev the engine.

4 SIGNS YOUR HEADLIGHTS NEED REPLACEMENT

Visibility is a critical part of driving. Not only do you have to be able to see the road, others on the road need to be able to see you. It's important to make sure your headlights are functioning properly every time you hit the road.

Here are the 4 most common signs that your headlights are failing or becoming less effective:

1. A flickering light, which is usually the first sign of lamp failure.
2. A color change. This is harder to see because of the differences in bulb intensity, but a dim, pinkish color is a good indicator of the condition of the lamp.
3. The lamp goes out and then back on.
4. An aging vehicle.

QUICK TIP
Make sure you can see in all weather conditions. If is is raining, your headlights must be on. And always remember to clear snow and dirt from headlights to boost visibility.

EFFECTIVE AIR BAG USAGE

The power of air bags can be life-saving, but if not used correctly air bags can cause serious injury. Prevent injuries with these air bag safely suggestions.

FOR ADULTS:
*Leave 10 inches between you and the steering wheel or
dashboard to help prevent injuries
*Tilt steering wheel down so the air bag can deploy toward your
chest

FOR CHILDREN:
*Infants should NEVER ride in the front seat. Children under 12
should always ride in the back seat.

STEERING WHEEL HAND PLACEMENT
*Varies by vehicle - read your owner's manual
*The best position is 9 and 3 if the airbags were to deploy.
*The worst position of 10 and 2 could be deadly in the event of a
crash and is not recommended by professionals due to the risk
of airbag injuries.
*Acceptable position is 8 and 4 when driving for long distances
on the highway/freeway.

All tires are round, black and made of rubber, so they should all perform similarly, right?

WRONG!

While tires appear similar to the naked eye, they are designed for different uses and performance capabilities.
When choosing what tires to put on your vehicle, consider the climate where you live, driving conditions, and your performance needs.

Here is a breakdown of summer tires vs. all-season tires vs. winter tires....

SUMMER TIRES

*These are ideal for customers who are looking to get the most
speed and agility from their high-performance vehicles.
*Perform well in both wet and dry conditions.
*Tread patterns have less grooving to allow more rubber contact
with the road and compounds are more flexible, enhancing the
grip.
*Some have shallow treads depths that allow for more stability
when the tire is pushed to its limit. However, a more tread
depth means the tire will wear out faster.
*When temperatures are around 40-45 degrees F., summer tires
typically lose traction and other performances so drivers should
switch to all-season or winter tires for these conditions.

ALL-SEASON TIRES

*Designed to offer a combination of benefits of both summer and
winter tires, but offer performance trade-offs.
*Offers less grip than summer tires therefore sacrificing some *performance in cornering, steering, and braking.
*Can provide decent performance in winter, but winter tires offer
better traction in extreme winter conditions.
*Feature longer tread life than summer tires due to larger tread
depths.

WINTER TIRES

*Designed to combat cold temperatures, snow, ice and slush
that can make winter driving difficult.
*When it hits 40 degrees F. and lower consistently, it's time for
winter tires.
*Designed to remain flexible, allowing the tire to better grip the
road when it becomes cold, whereas all-season and summer
tires can stiffen when cold.
*Tread patterns are designed to reduce snow buildup.
*Feature an increased number of biting edges. These slits in the
tire provide grip on ice.
*Keeping winter tires on a vehicle in warm weather wears the tire
faster, and a winter tire will provie less handling at warmer
temperatures.

What's Dripping from my vehicle??
Understand what the puddles mean that you see when you pull out of a garage or parking place...

BRAKE FLUID -if you have leaking brake fluid, do not drive your vehicle. Have your vehicle towed to a trusted repair facility since leaking brake fluid could mean your brakes are failing.

TRANSMISSION FLUID - this could be caused by a seal or gasket failure. Low fluid levels in the transmission can cause the transmission to fail.

ENGINE OIL - this could mean there is a seal or gasket failure. If you see oil after oil change, take it back to make sure everything is secure.

COOLANT - the leak could be caused by a water pump or hose failure. Visit AAMCO to have it diagnosed.

Over 80% ignore the signs for a transmission service

Here are 3 reasons you need a transmission service now:
1. Grinding or rattling noise
2. Trouble shifting gears or responds slowly
3. Surging vehicle

If you ignore the signs for your transmission fluid service, you could end up with a costly transmission rebuild.

3 in 5 transmission rebuilds are caused by improper maintenance or service to the transmission.

Don't let your transmission overheat due to low fluid or old fluid. Transmission fluid is usually red in color which can be observed while the engine keeps on running. In the event your transmission fluid changes color to either brown or black, this is a sure sign your transmission fluid needs to be cleaned. Contaminates would cause of the color change.

It is best to replace the fluid before it changes color. The first sample in the picture is the proper color for the fluid. The rest indicate potential problems.

Experts recommend that a transmission needs to be flushed or serviced once a year or after the vehicle has covered 20,000 miles. Some vehicles require you to flush it sooner in order to keep your car tuned to its full capacity.
