No one likes being truly honest about the reality of a Mental Illness. Progress happens when we get real and learn to understand what truly is going on.

John had been to see the psychologist for some personality tests for upcoming career changes. When the psychologist just dropped into the conversation that John had depression, it landed like a hammer on a small toe.

It hurt, but he didn’t want to show it. Men don’t express feelings. He stayed in control, and that’s what real men do.

It was election day here in New Zealand last Saturday and as I stood in line to cast my vote I started a conversation with an elderly English gentleman.

He had come to New Zealand in 1968 on a world trip.

Running out of money, he decided to stay.

‘Well, why wouldn’t you?’ he commented.

We both discussed how wonderful it was to come out on Election day and express our democratic right. It was part of being a citizen and a member of the community.

To know that your opinion mattered just as much as the next person.

Democracy – love it.

I also wondered about all those candidates casting their own votes.

Fighting for the approval of an irrational parent is a soul-destroying endeavour. Give it up by getting centred on God, and learning how to approve of yourself. D. Riddell
