"If you build it, they will come," no longer applies online...and hasn't for a while. In order to succeed in life we have to take responsibility for what we want to happen and make it reality. Stop waiting for the apple to fall from the tree or for someone else to bring it to you. It's time to stand up and just GO TAKE IT!
Lately I've been pondering the idea of 'taking responsibility' lately when it comes to growth.

I think it applies to numerous areas of life but I started pondering it with regards to growing blogs and businesses after a couple of conversations with bloggers late last year.

In both conversations I got the feeling from the bloggers that they felt like they deserved or were entitled to have success with their blog. But strangely the sense of entitlement didn't really come from any action that they'd taken - but they just seemed to have this sense that they should succeed 'just because'.

In both conversations I said words to this effect:

"Nobody is going to grow your blog for you. You need to take responsibility for it and be intentional about doing the things that will grow it'.

I think they both knew this already - but somehow there was this sense of entitlement that they both couldn't seem to shake that actually seemed to be holding them back.

When I dug a little deeper with one of them about why he had this attitude he paused for a moment or two and reflected:

'My Mother told me that I can be anything that I want and I believed her.... The problem is she never told me that to be anything I want I need to do the work first.'

I wonder if this 'entitlement' is something that holds a lot of people back in different areas of life.

I meet a lot of people who seem expect that good things will happen to them.... but who never actually do much to enhance their lives.

note: of course I also meet a lot of people who work their butts off but who never seem to get anywhere.... and others who never work and who have everything land in their laps.... so it's not just about working either!

While sometimes chance encounters and luck do bring about 'good things' my own experience is that it is when I think about what I want to see happen and am intentional about taking action to make those things eventuate that I'm much more likely to see the good stuff happen.

Thoughts?
