The real motivation for Sandstorm: Enabling open source web apps. Because without federated hosting, they just don't work.

Via a friend* on Google+.  I love Fugues.

*This brings up an interesting problem.  Google+ wouldn't let me reshare my friend's post to "public" because my friend only shared it with a limited audience.  But I think it's cool if lots of people see it, so I'd rather share it publicly, so I end up not giving my friend credit.  Is there a better solution?

For those of you who somehow didn't find 2048 distracting enough, here's an infinite version where you build up notes along the circle of fifths. It plays the notes as you match them, which is strangely soothing and hypnotic, even when it's somewhat discordant. The infinity is handled by simply trying to get as many cycles around the circle as you can.

A warning: new tiles are only generated from within the five notes prior to the highest note you have on the board. This means that when you open up a new note, any notes you have from the "oldest" note you still have on the board can easily be stranded: no new tiles will show up which match them. This definitely adds some challenge.

h/t +Brooks Moses.
This circle of fifths game, 2048 Infinite, is a musical game that will help you memorize and understand the circle of fifths.

This is really funny.

"An impossibly large buffer error is even worse, because these errors often linger in the background, quietly overwriting your state with evil; if a misaligned memory access is like a criminal burning down your house in a fail-stop manner, an impossibly large buffer error is like a criminal who breaks into your house, sprinkles sand atop random bedsheets and toothbrushes, and
then waits for you to slowly discover that your world has been tainted by madness."

I am a systems programmer.  Mickens's rant is painful, funny, and true.

Is there really no way to see who is online in the GTalk replacement? What is the use of a chat program where you can't see who's available to chat?

Normally I use online status to decide whether to call or send an IM.

I had the lomo saltado: beef and french fries and onions and rice. Really hearty and an ample portion --- appropriate for the price. I hope I have a chance to come back here.

We ate the bulgogi and a big Korean pancake, and tofu soup on the house. All three were good and generous; the two of us tall men couldn't quite finish it all. The service was pretty quick (on a Monday evening). We liked the atmosphere of the restaurant. It felt cozy somehow, though not for lack of space. Maybe the ceiling was a bit lower than usual.
