Distant Light

On a chilly overcast day, as seen from this field of glacial rubble high in Alaska's Chugach Mountains, a solitary beam of light breaks through the clouds to illuminate the far end of the valley. I'm not sure why, but I am unduly fond of darker and perhaps foreboding images like this.

Ram's Retreat

Sunday I hiked up higher into Alaska's Chugach Mountains, where midsummer has not quite yet arrived; the full greenery of summer has not overtaken last year's dry grass. Last autumn I climbed the mountain in the background of this scene. It looks precarious, but there is a safe passage that winds up the mountainside. About a decade ago as I was climbing up onto that ridge just below the cliffs, I awakened a full-curl dall sheep ram from its slumber, a mere 15 ft away. We were both very surprised! He scrambled into the mountainside and disappeared, which left me wondering for years where he went, and if a human could follow. Last autumn I found out! :-)

Alaska Stream in Summer

It's raining again tonight in Alaska's Chugach Mountains. In midsummer, it's daylight here until very late. This photo was taken at 9:30 pm! Several flower varieties appear in this scene, including Dwarf Fireweed (pink), Indian Paintbrush (yellow), Monks Hood (purple), Cow Parsnip (white), Wild Geranium (blue), Northern Yarrow (white), False Hellebore (white), and Meadow Arnica (yellow).

Chugach Midsummer

Here, fireweed blooms on an idyllic midsummer day, deep in the heart of Alaska's Chugach Mountains. Fireweed is a flower as lovely, in my eyes, as any flower not having "weed" in its name. It's one of my very favorite things about summer in Alaska. In this high valley, some of the fireweed plants have already turned fiery in early anticipation of the coming autumn.

Sheep Safely Graze (you should really view full-screen!!) :-)

Here is the view that welcomed me as I crested Ship Lake Pass yesterday afternoon, in Alaska's Chugach Mountains. Few finer emeralds to behold on such a summer day! More than a dozen Dall Sheep were enjoying it too, having a picnic above the lake.

We've had a stretch of summer rain, recently. We're at summer peak, I think. Almost all the snow is gone, and wildflowers of all types are everywhere. Nothing like midsummer in Alaska's Chugach Mountains!

Blossoms and Torrents

These are the first flowers of the season appearing now beside the waterfalls in Alaska's Chugach Mountains. I think these are the Narcissus-Flowered Anemone. This is another shot of the falls from my visit last weekend.
