Did Madonna go too far with son's Donald Trump piñata?: by Stacy-Ann Gooden posted in Celebrities

With election season in full swing, candidates and their supporters have come out swinging. Madonna took that expression literally when she hosted her son's birthday party. The pop icon decided to turn the bash into a political statement by allowing her son and his guests to take a swing at a Donald Trump piñata.

According to the Stir, Madonna shared a video on social media of 11-year-old David saying, "No, I'm going to go for his neck and decapitate [him]," as he gets ready to smash the Trump piñata.
The camera quickly pans to the group of children waiting for David to take a crack at the papier-mâché stuffed with goodies.
It's no secret that Madonna supports Hillary Clinton. The Independent Journal reports, "Madonna has made her disdain for Trump clear in the past, posting her support for Hillary on Instagram and hurling invective at Trump's sons over a hunting photo."
There's also the photo that she posted on Instagram of the two women at a concert along with the caption, "Living For Hillary. Yes I vote for intelligence. I vote for equal rights for women and all minorities. Women Run the World now they have to get out and start supporting one another. No more misogynist feminists! No more mysogony. Get out and Vote."
When it comes to celebrities sharing their political beliefs, I certainly don't mind. However, I do find it disturbing to involve children in these kinds of horrible acts.
Don't get me wrong, I feel it's important to talk politics with kids. But, allowing a child to “decapitate” Trump is just wrong.
As a journalist, I've always been told to remain neutral and keep my political opinions to myself. However, with respect to this year's election, I can honestly say that I'm still undecided.
My husband and I often talk politics with our 6-year-old, who asks a ton of questions regarding the race for the White House. She's already got her mind made up of who should take over the oval office. We may not see eye to eye on some of the issues, but I encourage her to take a stance.
But whatever our political views, I'd never co-sign any of our children to swing away at a Trump piñata or any other candidate for that matter. It's down right vicious, if you ask me.
Moreover, a kid's birthday party should be just that - a fun and peaceful event with family and friends. Let's get back to whacking some kind of fictional character piñata, and avoid this kind of nonsense.

Did Madonna go too far allowing son to whack Donald Trump piñata?

You'll spot your family in the Storks movie, guaranteed: by Sara McGinnis posted in Celebrities

No matter if your family came together adoption, marriage, surrogacy -- or air delivery -- there's a wealth of diversity being celebrated in the new Storks movie.
A group of bloggers and I were recently invited to interview the voices and creators behind the feathered characters, as well as screen the film. I can tell you right now there was more than one of us caught with a tear in our eye by the time the credits rolled.
Here's what you need to know to kick things off: Storks used to deliver babies, but some years ago switched to regular old packages. When Junior (voiced by Andy Samberg) accidentally activates the "Baby Making Machine" he suddenly has a new bundle of joy on his hands and one more complicated delivery to make.
Take a look:
Does every single bit of the film's premise make logical sense? Heck no. I won't pretend it does -- but I'll also assure there's a ton of fun in this film and quite a few parenting-related bits that literally had me laughing out loud. Interspersed within the action are also some important messages that hit right in the feels.
Right now, take a look at a few fun answers we received while talking to the cast about making Storks and their own experiences caring for little ones...
Why does the baby have pink hair?
Brad Lewis (producer): "It's just early on when we were talking about baby hair colors, if we want the movie to lift the audience a little bit out of their seats we don't want it ground in reality so much.
"We didn't want to make super crazy colored babies all over the place, but we wanted to have a combination of natural haired characters and fun haired characters. Everybody just kind of went, 'Oh, this is a crazy baby factory.' It's like Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. This is, you know, our baby factory. So, we want it to be wondrous."
Was there much discussion of what age the "newborn" babies should be?
Nicholas Stoller (writer/director): "It just seemed like a six month old was the bull's eye, because they can do stuff but they can't really walk around. They're not so young that they look like creatures from another planet."

Where did you get the name Tulip?
Nicholas Stoller (writer/director): "My daughter named her."
Brad Lewis (producer): "But we should have a story like because she's a human. She's the only human that had two lips because they only have beaks, so two lips."
Was the inclusion of a diverse array of families intentional?
Brad Lewis (producer): "The great thing about families, family comes in all shapes, sizes, every sort of orientation, every sort of racial--every culture, right? So, it was super intentional for us to be universal and make sure that everybody sees this movie as it's an inclusive, family oriented movie. So, without a doubt, yes."
Doug Sweetland (director): "And the tagline says, find your flock, because it is one of the themes of the movie too. So, the idea that, you know, a bird and a girl and the baby end up becoming sort of like a makeshift surrogate family as they undergo this journey is similar. It would be an injustice to that theme to not represent the world sort of receiving babies at the end."

When in your life did you feel you found your "flock"?
Andy Samberg (voice of Junior): "I have siblings. I have two older sisters, and a lot of the reason that I do comedy and the comedy I do comes from that dynamic of, like, family goofing around in the house, like trying to make each other pee your pants kind of laughing. And I just chase that feeling in my life...
"I always describe getting hired at SNL kind of like as comedy Hogwarts. You're like, 'Oh, I finally am in the place where I belong. I don't have to pretend to be a Muggle.' I can just say jokes all the time and no one thinks I'm weird."
Have you had a chance to care for an infant or a baby in real life?
Andy Samberg (voice of Junior): "I've taken care of my sisters a little bit. Never like just me and an infant, but I hold the little burrito. I'm comfortable with it and I love it, but it obviously makes me nervous because I think everyone should be a little nervous with an infant, right?"
Katie Crown (voice of Tulip): "Our friends had a baby, and they wanted to go on a date so they dropped him off at me and my boyfriend's place. We're like, 'Yes, we'll take him for a night, whatever, man.' And it's like, 'He's just going to sleep.'
"We were excited. We had all this stuff planned. We're like, 'Oh, man, we're going to surprise them. We're going to take all these pictures and make a crazy calendar and put in all these funny poses and stuff.' And then by the time the baby's there, we're just like, 'You want the--hon, would you'--and we couldn't change the diaper.
"Right when they left, we're like, 'Bye.' And then I think, 'Oh. Oh, I guess we have to change this. Okay.' We're on the ground, and we ruined the first diaper, didn't know what we were doing. And then we got another one and we're just both like, 'I don't know. I don't know.' And so the calendar idea did not happen."

A look at what Storks star Kelsey Grammer told us (including why someone once threatened to call child protective services on him decades ago!):

What interested you in your role in Storks?
Kelsey Grammer: "Well, I am attracted to animated films basically because I have children and because I am grateful to all the actors that voiced the movies that were important to me when I was a child.
"I still think that animated films are probably the best movies being made today, and I think that may have been true for a long time. 101 Dalmatians is still one of my favorite movies, and I watch that all the time with my daughter. So, every time somebody calls me to do one of these, it's a presumptive joy."
(All images courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures)

Do you find it difficult to play the villain?
Kelsey: "Nah, it's like water off a duck's back. That's the kind of hairpin I am...I'm good at playing bad guys because I'm also good at playing good guys. I understand the human experience, and that's been my devotion for a long time now."

As a kid, did you believe in the storks-delivering-babies lore?
Kelsey: "Did not buy into it, never believed it, but liked it...Man just makes up this stuff. It's great. We're imagining weird, creative beings, and we've been doing it forever. The great poets, the great writers, the great stories that have been told, these are all what make us, you know, look at this world that we've been given, this extraordinary place where we live. And to look at a stork one day and think, 'They bring babies,' who did that? I love it."

Kelsey (continued): "And of course, when I have a real conversation with my children at the age appropriate moment, I tell them the amount of nuts and bolts I think they can actually handle. So, my 4-year-old would ask about a stork and I'd say, 'Not really, honey. That's just a game we play because it's fun to imagine it. It's about mom and dad loving each other, and if we just do it right then we get to have a family.' When they're 15, I have that other conversation."

You play a tough boss in Storks. Have you ever had an intimidating boss?
Kelsey: "I was a busboy at a restaurant called Magic Pan. And then I got a job on a soap opera, like a four day run, what they call an under five. And so, I walked up to the boss and I said, 'Listen, I've been given this job on One Life to Live. Can I go?' And he said, 'Well, you have to cover your shifts.'"

Kelsey (continued): "So I tried, and nobody could cover them. And I called that morning and I just [said], 'Listen, I'm really, really sorry about this. Someone's going to have to do it,' ... they put me on report to the Magic Pan Corporation. They brought me in and called me on the carpet and said, 'We are concerned that you may not be Magic Pan family material.'
"I said, 'Okay.' I was going to go to work, and then I stopped at the door and I turned around and I said, 'You know what? I'm not Magic Pan family material. I got to go.'"

What was one of the funniest parts to record during filming?
Kelsey: "My favorite part in the movie is from my own character in the moment when I say, 'They're penguins. They're very nurturing. You know, they did a whole documentary about it.'"

In the movie there's a theme about balance between career and work. How do you make it work?
Kelsey: "Less work, more family. That's what my life is now. When I was 28 and I had my first child, it was a little more work, a little less family, and I actually still kind of regret it. But there's almost nothing else you can do at that time in your life.
"That's when you're carving out your identity as what you're going to do for the rest of your life. And showing up for things is important, and you want to be there for your kids. So, honestly, with my first child, I took her to rehearsals with me a lot of the time. And she would sit in her little--it was called then a Maxi Taxi. This was 35 years ago. The Maxi Taxi was, like, the first sort of like semi portable baby seat. It was pretty cute."

Kelsey (continued): "But because I was on a theater schedule, I also took her with me to the bar after the show. She'd sit on the bar and sleep there while I'd have my chicken wings. I'd have my chicken wings and shoot a game of pool, and then I'd take her home and we'd go to sleep. She'd wake up around 10:00 a.m. in the morning. So, she was on my schedule.
"I did get in some trouble at that point. Somebody said, 'We're going to report you to child services.' I said, 'What the hell for? My child is cared for. She's eating. She is very happy.' And they went, 'Yes, you're right. I'm sorry.'"

Chrissy Teigen's birth day photo was definitely worth the wait: by Carolyn Robertson posted in Celebrities

Model and social media maven Chrissy Teigen took to Instagram a few days ago to share a very special throwback pic: A first family photo with her husband John Legend and their then newborn daughter Luna.
The sweet shot shows Chrissy lying in her hospital bed, with a very brand new Luna wrapped up on her chest as John looks adoringly down at their baby girl. It's beyond precious.
(See the photo here!)
This isn't the first time we've seen a photo of little Luna, who is now 5 months old. Chrissy and John both regularly post glimpses of their beautiful daughter. This is the first picture the couple have shared from the day of Luna's birth, however. It was definitely worth the wait.
Not that long ago, the first photos of a celebrity's baby would be an elaborately choreographed affair. The set would be perfect, the newborn would be posed, the lighting would be just so. And of course the brand new mom would look nothing short of stunning in full make-up and couture clothes. All of this would be splashed across a 4-page spread in some tabloid, an "exclusive" first look at so-and-so's new addition.

The age of social media, though, has brought with it a different approach. These days we're much more likely to see photos like this one: Real moments, real emotions. I look at Chrissy's photo and I can see what they're feeling. I remember feeling that way myself, in that instant.
I much prefer these natural images to the completely staged ones, don't you? What could be more perfect than brand new parents staring down at their brand new baby? No lighting could hold a candle to that.
From stretch marks to mom diapers, all of the reasons we love Chrissy Teigen's honest take on motherhood:

Reason #1: The time she admitted that childbirth is definitely not glamorous - even if you're a supermodel. "No one told me I would be coming home in diapers too," she Tweeted after Luna's birth, later posting a photo of "perineal irrigation bottle" (aka the post-baby squirt bottle we all love to hate) with the caption, "Buying myself a push present."
(REX Features)

Reason #2: The time she posted a photo of herself breastfeeding baby Luna during a photo shoot like it was no big deal. Like it was a totally, completely normal thing to do. Because it is.
(PR Photos)

Reason #3: The time she shared a shot of her stretch marks on Snapchat, writing, "“LOL my stretch marks have tributaries." She also opened up about her post-baby "bounce-back," saying, "But it's all smoke and mirrors, too. People on Instagram forget that you're showing them what you want them to see. We have filters. You're able to shoot yourself at these angles where you're proud of the photo. I would hate for anybody to think that I didn't get a stretch mark, or that I don't still have a dark line on my belly. It's there for sure. I feel bad that anyone else would feel bad about themselves."
(Broadimage/REX/Shutterstock)

Reason #4: The time she asked the question that has plagued every new parent: "My biggest parenting conundrum: why it is so hard to put someone who is already sleepy to sleep?" Why indeed.
(Broadimage/REX/Shutterstock)

Reason #5: The time she stood up for Kristin Cavallari when the famous mom-of-three's parenting skills were harshly criticized: “I will never know why parents criticize others so harshly, knowing they'd go insane if they were on the receiving end ALLTHETIME. NO parent out there thinks they're perfect. I loathe these s--thead commenters. Who would want to make someone feel horrible for fun? Anyway, love you @KristinCav and screw everyone's bored ass!”
(REX Features)

Reason #6: The time she went on Splash Mountain at Disneyland and pulled a total mom move. "MY MILK!" she captured the hilarious pic, captured by the ride's camera, that showed her clutching both breasts. See the amazing photo here.
(Broadimage/REX/Shutterstock)

Reason #7: The time she jokingly revealed that it can take a very long time for things to return to "normal" after giving birth, Tweeting, "I feel like tiny underpaid workers are putting my uterus back together and they're super bitter about it so they aren't doing a good job."
(REX Features)

Reason #8: The time she shrugged off all of the critics who gave her flak for going on a date night with her husband John Legend when Luna was 10 days old. "I went to dinner. People are pissed. Good morning!" she Tweeted the next day.
(Broadimage/REX/Shutterstock)

Reason #9: Every time she celebrated her gorgeous pregnancy and post-baby curves. "Thank u @monicarosestyle for teaching me to love and embrace these new inches," she wrote of this figure-hugging dress she wore in June.

Baby 7! Storks star Kelsey Grammer is expanding his "flock": by Sara McGinnis posted in Celebrities

As the due date for Storks to arrive in theaters draws near, Kelsey Grammer has some big baby news to celebrate. No, he's not expecting a wing-delivered bundle of joy, but his wife, Kayte Walsh, is pregnant with their third child together!
Greer Grammer, the 61-year-old's daughter from a previous relationship, confirmed the joyous news during a recent interview.
People reports that when asked if she was excited to have another sibling on the way, the 24-year-old actress replied: "Yes! Yeah, yeah. I'm super excited. I think my dad and Kayte are the best parents. They love having little kids and they want a huge family, so I think it's just really exciting."
Kelsey and Kayte welcomed son Kelsey Gabriel Elias in July 2014, while their daughter Faith now 4. His four other children from previous relationships include daughters Spencer, Greer, Mason Olivia, and son Jude Gordon.
I was lucky enough to recently have the chance to speak with Kelsey in person, in celebration of his role in Storks -- and I could tell firsthand this is a man who is excited about his family, or "flock."
Playing off the theme that families are made in a number of ways, and come in a wide rainbow of varieties, the group of bloggers I was in asked the man who plays big boss Hunter, "When was it you felt like you found your true flock?"
Kelsey shared with us: "For me, I found my professional family a lot sooner than I did find my personal close family. That's really the last six years since I met my wife Kayte, but it's been fantastic. It just proves that when it comes you should enjoy it, because it may take a while."
I could be mistaken, but from my place in the room I thought I heard his voice catch while saying these words, and tears threatening. It was endearingly honest and sweet.

It's funny how you think you "know" a celebrity from their roles and various late night chat show appearances, and then you hear them get serious about their families and a whole new facet of their personality comes out.
Especially seeing as how Kelsey and Kayte know the pain of loss firsthand, I wholeheartedly am wishing them a safe and healthy pregnancy. I hope we'll hear word of baby joy for them in the coming months, and in the meantime I'll be gathering up my two boys for a movie date. This film has all the laughs you're hoping for, but also hits right in the feels. I'll be sneaking a few hugs in at the theater, for sure.

Olivia Wilde gets flack for griping about not being offered a seat: by Sara McGinnis posted in Celebrities

Olivia Wilde has a few words for subway riders who aren't courteous enough to offer their seats to visibly pregnant women.
The actress, who is currently expecting her second child with Jason Sudeikis, recently took to Twitter to vent about being left standing. Check out her tweet:

NBD, able-bodied riders who won't give your seat to a GIANT preggo. I'll just stand riiiiight next to your head and pray I go into labor.
— olivia wilde (@oliviawilde) September 14, 2016
And to be clear -- it's pretty obvious she's pregnant! Check out a photo of the beauty from the Colossal premiere on September 9.

Although many agreed with Olivia Wilde, you probably won't be surprised to hear she also received some flack from the web at large.
I spied a few comments about, "Well, if women want to be treated equally..." (Sigh. It's not as though men can start taking turns being pregnant), and then there was this gem: "Pregnancy is not an illness or disability. You're rich, call Uber or catch a cab! Entitled much?"
The mother of 2-year-old Otis later responded with this tweet:

Whoa whoa whoa, it's not about scolding, or celebrity, or who can afford an uber. It's simply about us all looking out for each other. ✌️
— olivia wilde (@oliviawilde) September 15, 2016

There was also another string of comments about Olivia needing to move out of the city that caught my eye. Is it possible the likelihood of someone giving their seat up for you depends on where you live? From what I saw, people living in southern areas have experienced this kind of gesture far more often than us northerners.
I honestly can't say I've ever given my seat up for someone who is pregnant, or seen anyone else do it, but to be fair I very rarely use that kind of transportation. I'm a suburbanite with a car. I do try and help out whenever and however I can, but seating isn't something I encounter.
How about you?

Do you think the odds of someone offering up their seat to a pregnant woman is a regional gesture?

Is Hilaria Baldwin's post-birth belly photo helping or hurting?: by Sara McGinnis posted in Celebrities

Hilaria Baldwin has taken a headline-making selfie yet again, posing for the second time in a bra and underwear just after giving birth.
"I took this yesterday when Leonardo was about 24 hours old," the yoga instructor, wife of Alec Baldwin and newly minted mom of three wrote with her Instagram photo. "I did the same thing right after Rafael was born."
Check out Hilaria's new belly-baring pic by clicking here.
She went on to explain: "It always makes me a bit nervous to do something like this, but I feel that in the age of such strong body shaming, I want to do all that I can to normalize a real body and promote healthy self esteem.
"Many of you know that I love to show the process of life's experiences on the body and I am a firm believer in how a good diet and the right balance of exercise make us happy, healthy, and strong. So from here on, I want to dedicate the majority of my #366daysoflivingclearly #hilarialcm daily posts to getting back in shape and I invite you to do it with me."

Trying to cut back on some of the questions she was pounded with previously, Hilaria Baldwin added:
"Did I have a c section?: No, I pushed him out
Where are all the pads for bleeding?: I took them out briefly to snap this pic as there is a limit to how much you need to see.
Where am I?: in the hospital room bathroom #glamour
Oh, and no filter. Just brightened it up a bit."
Sounds good to me, and I actually quite do appreciate the Q&A. Even I was wondering where those magical mesh postpartum panties were.
Now I'm curious to see what kind of response her photo gets this time. The previous pic sparked a bit of debate among our BabyCenter Blog readers, with one commenting:
"Wait are we supposed to be shocked and horrified at her 'huge' postpartum belly? She is supposed to be thought of as brave by showing her GORGEOUS MODEL FIGURE & Fancy bra 2 days after giving birth, so show what a real woman looks like?? Not even close.. I feel like she's showing off how amazing she looks... & she DOES LOOK AMAZING..but is she brave for showing off her sexy curvy after baby pose? Not even close."
A second added in part: "I am not a fit shamer or fat shamer or any other type of shamer, but c'mon- this is such a thinly veiled humble brag!"
On the one hand I can see what these commenters were saying, and Hilaria's photo bares extremely little resemblance to how I recall my one-day postpartum body looking -- which makes me hesitant to say this is helping promote "normal." For many of us, there's no way we'll ever look this great after giving birth.
But then again, this is one mom's real experience. Who am I to say it doesn't count because it's too good?

Do you think Hilaria Baldwin's photo is helping the cause?

Nicole Richie admits her early parenting "oops": by Carolyn Robertson posted in Celebrities

"If you could re-do one parenting moment, what would it be?"
(I know what you're thinking: Just one?!)
Mom-of-two Nicole Richie was asked this question during a recent interview with PEOPLE, and her answer shows that - at least when it comes to the day-to-day dilemmas of parenting - she's not all that different than the rest of us.
"I was very quiet around my kids when they were babies and now they're light sleepers," admits Nicole, who has daughter Harlow, 8, and son Sparrow, 7, with her husband Joel Madden. "So I wish that I had been a little more 'rough' with them."
In terms of parenting faux pas, this isn't really a major one. If this is Nicole's biggest "do-over" wish, I'd say she's doing pretty good.
It is relatable, though.

I made a similar misstep with my oldest daughter. I didn't enforce quiet, but I did make sure that when it was time to go to bed everything was always exactly the same - always in her bed, always on her own, always with the door shut and the black-out shade drawn and a bedtime story read. Every detail had to be in place, in order. When she was a baby, this consistency was probably a good idea. I just should have made a point of shaking things up a little as she got older so we didn't end up dependent upon this very precise routine.
My youngest, on the other hand, could fall asleep just about anywhere. You live and you learn, I guess!
Looking back, what part of parenting would you do over if you could?
“What's the single biggest mistake parents can make?” These folks weighed in...

Who's called what when grandkids are older than baby?: by Sara McGinnis posted in Celebrities

Thanks to having started his family decades ago and continuing to grow his brood now, Terrence Howard is in the unique situation of having children younger than his grandchildren.
The 47-year-old actor, who has a total of five children and two grandchildren, recently opened up about the newest addition to his family -- a baby boy named Hero Howard that arrived this summer.
"(He's named) Hero because he's changed my life. He's my everything," the Empire star revealed on Live! With Kelly. Speaking of the newborn, Terrence joked: "He's my new favorite... You know, we do have favorites as parents... It's the one who needs us the most who becomes our favorite..."
Terrence and wife Mira, pictured below, are also the parents of a son named Qirin Love, who was born in May 2015.

Qirin and Hero are obviously quite a bit younger than their half-siblings. Terrence Howard's grown children include daughters Heaven and Aubrey, and a son named Hunter. Thanks to Aubrey, the actor has two grandchildren -- and they just so happen to also be older than his kids with Mira.
Sharing that his grandkids have gotten creative about verbiage for the arrangement, Terrence explained, "I've got a 4-year-old granddaughter and I've got a 2-year-old grandson, and they call Hero and Qirin 'baby uncles.'"
Pretty cute, right?
Realistically they'll probably feel like cousins as they grow up, but it is quite something to have such a large age gap between kids. Personally, I can't imagine being both a grandparent and having two under age 2 of my own to take care of -- but if it works for Terrence and Mira then good on them!

Are there any unique relations in your family? What verbiage have you developed?

Kim Kardashian & North step out in identical silver sequin dresses: by Carolyn Robertson posted in Celebrities

Three-year-old North West took a fashion cue from her famous mom Kim Kardashian this week.
The mother-daughter duo opted for identical dresses when they attended Kanye West's concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City on September 5. The pair were spotted heading into the venue wearing silver, sequined gowns with asymmetrical hemlines and cut-out detailing in the back. The price tag for Kim's adult-sized version? A cool $12,500.
Kim and North did differ when it came to footwear, however. While the mom-of-two went with clear stilettos, little North sported a much comfier-looking pair of sneakers.

This isn't the first time Kim, 35, and North have twinned their looks. They recently sported matching braids, matching leather jackets, matching fur jackets, matching little black dresses. And of course, there was that time they stole the spotlight at Paris Fashion Week in matching black lace ensembles.
North doesn't look all that comfortable in this particular sequin number, but then again, maybe it's the flash of the cameras rather than the glare off of her shiny gown that's making her look a little hesitant. Maybe every little girl would love to have the chance to get all dressed up just like mom.
I have two daughters and must admit that, barring games of dress-up in the living room, we've never really done the matching thing. For one thing, I basically live in jeans and they flat-out refuse to wear them. Also, unicorn-stamped dresses and My Little Pony Ts always seem to look a lot cuter on them than they do on me.
What do you think? Do you ever match outfits with your little one?
Some of Kim's most memorable outfits...

Will these celeb moms inspire you to go makeup-free?: by Sara McGinnis posted in Celebrities

Alicia Keys isn't just going makeup-free to the grocery store, she's turned up everywhere from the MTV VMAs to morning television without so much as mascara on. Some are applauding her decision, but others find her being vocal about why she's quit covering up to be aggravating.
It all started back in May, when the 35-year-old wrote a Lenny Letter about previously feeling she "was not good enough for the world to see," and her mind was constantly filled with "insecure, superficial, but honest thoughts."

"Before I started my new album, I wrote a list of all the things that I was sick of," she explained. "And one was how much women are brainwashed into feeling like we have to be skinny, or sexy, or desirable, or perfect. One of the many things I was tired of was the constant judgment of women."
After some soul-searching, the mother of two concluded: "I don't want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing."
Impressively, Alicia Keys has stuck by her word no matter where she's performing.

Fellow mom Nicole Richie recently spoke out about agreeing with Alicia, although Nicole often still gets dolled up for events.
"I stay away from makeup because it clogs my skin," the mother of Harlow and Sparrow Madden told People. "I have dry skin so I moisturize all the time. I just this year seriously getting into sunscreen, been warned about it [for] 15 years.
"I wouldn't say that I'm against it because I know people that really get joy and feel the most like themselves when they put on makeup. I feel the most like myself when I don't have any on so that's the road I go down."
But Alicia, for one, has gotten some heat for being so open about her makeup-free decision. One recent headline reads, "Don't Use Alicia Keys' Bare Face To Shame Women Who Wear Makeup," while another states, "Alicia Keys isn't brave for taking makeup off. For most of us, putting it on is braver.
The trouble, it seems, is taking any one line of thinking and going too far with it. The moment you insinuate makeup is for people who feel bad about themselves, you get a push back.
After hearing from those who felt criticized for liking makeup, Alicia tweeted:

Y'all, me choosing to be makeup free doesn't mean I'm anti-makeup. Do you! pic.twitter.com/Mg0Ug9YA9q
— Alicia Keys (@aliciakeys) August 29, 2016

Her husband, Swizz Beatz, spoke out to support her VMAs look, saying: "Somebody's sitting at home mad, because somebody didn't wear makeup on their face… not your face, but they didn't put makeup on their face, because they just didn't feel like wearing makeup...But you're mad because that person didn't put makeup to please you? What sh*t is this? Because you can do whatever you want to do. Think about it… this is deep."
Although I'm inclined to agree with Swizz for the most part, I can also see how so many applauding Alicia's bravery to go makeup-free creates the idea those who are wearing makeup aren't brave enough to do the same.
For me, it's almost a non-issue, as I wear very little makeup, but I definitely have had the thoughts Alicia referred to in her letter. Despite only wearing a little bit, I felt for a long time I couldn't go out without it -- that it would be so embarrassing for others to see me unkempt.
But in the last year or so those thoughts have mellowed out. I think it has to do with turning 35 more than anything else, and simply accepting this is who I am and what I look like. I'll go to the store now without makeup if that's what I feel like doing, but it wasn't Alicia or anyone else who made me feel it was OK. I had to come around to it on my own.
For what it's worth though, I'm also going to keep wearing it when I feel like it. If you see me with mascara on, please don't go assuming I'm not "brave" enough to skip it. I just felt like it.

Do you wear makeup? Why is that? What do you make of Alicia Keys' makeup-free stance causing a stir?

Famous moms who won't permanently alter their appearance speak out about plastic surgery:

Kate Winslet has been quite vocal about her stance on having work done. "I will never give in," she proclaimed in 2011. "It goes against my morals, the way that my parents brought me up and what I consider to be natural beauty."
Her children are daughter Mia, and sons Joe and Bear.
Kate's feelings are so strong on this topic she went so far as to create the British Anti-Cosmetic Surgery League, a vow between herself and our next star mom to never get surgery.

Emma Thompson has spoken out against plastic surgery by stating, "It's not a normal thing to do, and the culture that we've created that says it's normal, is not normal."
She's mom to daughter Gaia and son Tindyebwa.

Salma Hayek has taken on the topic of Botox specifically, sharing, "Trust me, I've been tempted—but I resist!
"Think about what happens to your muscles and skin if you're sick and don't move for a few days. It all atrophies! Plus, if you freeze a muscle in your face, other muscles have to compensate. Once you stop, what does that look like?"
The actress is likely working to set a great example for her daughter, Valentina.

Judi Dench, who celebrated her 80th birthday in 2014, has earned the admiration of her peers for saying no plastic surgery.
Actress Kim Cattrall said once, "I look at people like Judi Dench, who's in her 70s, and I think, 'What the hell am I frightened of? In my life and career I want to embrace ageing because I think that's what's interesting. I think a forehead without any lines doesn't tell me they've lived a life."
Judi's daughter is named Tara Cressida Frances Williams, but goes by Finty.

Funny mom Tina Fey is planning on early retirement over going under the knife. She says, "Your choices are: Get old, or look creepy. I don't want to do it, so I feel I've got to get my money and get out of here before this thing [points to her face] blows. Because I feel like the years of sleep deprivation are going to catch up with me."
She's mom to daughters Alice and Penelope.

In 2010 Meryl Streep said, "To each his own. I really understand the chagrin that accompanies ageing, especially for a woman, but I think people look funny when they freeze their faces."
This Oscar-winning actress is mom to four! Her daughters are Mamie, Grace and Louisa, while her son's name is Henry.

“I just don't know if I want to mess with that,” Diane Keaton has shared. “The point is, no matter what you do, you're going to get older and you won't be here forever. So how do you grapple with it? How do you feel good about yourself?”
Diane is mom to son Duke and daughter Dexter.

Jamie Lee Curtis: “I am appalled that the term we use to talk about aging is ‘anti,'” she once blogged. “Aging is human evolution in its pure form. Death, taxes and aging …. We are ALL going to age and soften and mellow and transition.”
Her children are daughter Annie and son Thomas.

Julia Roberts thinks of her children on the rare instance she's tempted to have something done.
“It was not a cute look for me,” she said after experiencing Botox's frozen-face syndrome. “My feeling is, I have three children who should know what emotion I'm feeling at the exact moment I'm feeling it.”
She's mom to daughter Hazel, and sons Phinnaeus and Henry.

Brooke Shields has flirted with having work done, but is careful not to go too far. In 2010 she explained, "I want laser treatment because I'm not a fan of my wrinkles, but I have to find someone with a light touch. I'm scared I'll end up looking like the Joker."
Her daughters are Grier and Rowan.

Sigourney Weaver believes "life should put lines on your face."
“I find that look scary,” she once said in an interview. “I like getting older. There's nothing more inspiring to me than a woman in her 70s who's full of life and still useful. I never notice age in people's faces. I just look at the whole person.”
The Aliens actress is mom to a singleton, daughter Charlotte.

Julianne Moore is wary of having work done becoming too common. She is quoted as saying, “Cosmetic surgery itself starts to look normal, and we lose track of what a real face is like.”
This star is mom to son Caleb and daughter Liv.

In 2007, Jodie Foster told People magazine, "'It's not my thing. I don't have anything against it for other people. Whatever they want to do, I'm fine with it. For me, it's really a self-image thing. Like, I'd rather have somebody go, 'Wow, that girl has a bad nose' than 'Wow, that girl has a bad nose job.'"
She is mom to sons Charles and Kit.
