The inspiration for Shakespeare's Hamlet rises ominously behind a defencelessly spindly little Christmas tree. Kronborg castle's origins date back to the early 1400's, but no broody Prince Hamlet ever lived there.
Good to know that there is such a rock-solid precedent in English literature for making up such nobility as one needs for the crafting of a story. After all, Hamlet is a prince. The most I aspire to is an imaginary duke, or five.

Ah, the ancient custom of entertaining tourists! My lovelies, orientalism is alive and well, and eating shawarma and gobi masala in a random patch of desert, thousands of miles from the dishes' origins. I believe this calls for a gin and tonic.

What manner of witchery has reduced itself to a slow bubble beneath the bark of this ancient tree?

In case you thought the Gothic was gone, be warned: it lurks everywhere.
This creepy, life-like doll, situated in the attic rafters of a small castle, is reputed to have the power of preservation for the building. The legend warns that, should it be moved, the castle shall fall, sinking into the moat that surrounds it...

Buda-ful antiquity ;)

This is a view of Pest from the elevated, aristocratic view of Buda castle.

Budapest, Hungary, is, as Mary Musgrove would put it, "One of your new creations" (Persuasion, Austen, ch 9). It is the product of the 1873 merger of Buda on the west side of the Danube and Pest on the east. These two halves were once confined to staring at each other with curious longing over the relentless stream of the Danube, accessible to each other only by a clandestine boat trip.
