I am at lost for words has to how disappointed I am with HP as a brand, both in terms of product and service.

My brand new laptop's hard-disk just stopped working out of nowhere within 6 months of purchase. So I call up the service center who tell me to take it to the service center. Land up at the service center I've been told the hard-disk probably needs to be replaced, and when asked for the backup, been told its solely my responsibility to take care of it.
Then I was asked for the OS disks, which my vendor didn't tell me about this 90 day policy of making a hard-copy of OS, on purchase. I am told to bear the charges of shipping these disks now.
So I called up the "customer care" helpline and explain my conundrums, to which I am made to listen to 10-15 minutes worth of stories on why HP has such and such policies. Finally, agreed to escalate the matter. Put on hold for like 15-20 minutes and then spoke with a senior member, who again beat me around the bush explaining same things.

I've been told things like,"Sir we are asking you to pay for the shipping of the disks and costs of disks, something which you didn't pay for earlier." So earlier, when disks were provided to me(other vendors), I didn't see a breakdown of dvd charges or dvd shipping charges in the invoice!
Anyway, after much frustration I've been "assured" that this matter will be treated in the next 24 hours and I would be getting an answer on this on mail or personally for this dude's manager or someone. 24 hours became 96 and still no word. So I call up the "customer care" again, and I am told there is no update on this ticket(an SLA of 24 hours and no update in 96, bravo HP!)

Point number 2 : So I agree to bear the charges of getting the data from the old hard-disk, but I am told I am in no way supposed to tamper with the hard-disk. It'll void the warranty otherwise! If the hard-disk itself was so good, I wouldn't have to get it replaced in the first place! And I don't see the point as to why my new hard disk will lose its warranty if an old non-working hard-disk is tampered with?
HP, you have no idea how important data I am losing because of YOUR faulty product. At the end of the day, its a machine which does break without any explanation, and I get that. But HP, you should have better means to assuage a customer's pain. And its not like I am coming after a couple of years of the purchase, its barely 6 months! Rather than helping me out on this, you are giving me more pains.
Also, what guarantee do I get that after returning my old hard-drive, HP reps won't be messing around with it?

From my perspective after 6 months, I'll be getting a laptop without an OS and without my data. Looks like I should head back to my previous vendor Dell, who's laptop lasted me a good 6 years and provided me better(like way better customer care) and parts.
