'Eventually, Holt says, any local developer or civic hacker should be able to log on to Civic Cloud remotely and “go provision a new server for themselves,” where they might play around with creating new apps and tools that make use of the full gigabit.'

I'd eventually like to have something like this for Madison Civic Hacking. I don't know that running our own hardware is the right answer - it might be better to just try to get a block of funding for Heroku or whatever IaaS/PaaS and use that, or to partner with someone like the Madison Public Library to offer some kind of hosting solution.

A new project from Github:

"Today we're proud to announced the launch of government.github.com, a website dedicated to showcasing the amazing efforts of public servants and civic hackers around the globe.

Everything about this is great.

It's interesting to think about how this was a national project from the start. I wonder if it had been created by a specific city if they would have opened it take playgrounds anywhere in the country.

Saw one of UW's kiosks in the wild recently. This one is hanging at the new Dejope dorm and includes real-time stop data for Observatory Drive.

The program for this week is “Testing the Waters: Citizen Water Quality Monitoring” (abstract below). It's Thursday at 7:30am, at the Verex Plaza next to James Madison Park

Citizen Science is very much a kindred spirit to Civic Hacking, and we should keep in touch with these folks.

"In May 2013, Clean Lakes Alliance launched a pilot project for its new Citizen Water Quality Monitoring program under the leadership of Friends of Clean Lakes board member Jon Standridge, a retired water research scientist from the University of Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene. Our belief is that citizen monitoring can be a powerful tool to raise awareness and increase citizen engagement with the lakes. Standridge will take us through the pilot program and what we’ve learned so far, as well as discussing the public health issues associated with E.coli and blue green occurrences in the Yahara chain."

This has been an open tab for a couple of days so I don't remember where it came from, but I thought this piece was very good, and was a start at an attempt to look at what "Civic Innovation" means to technologists, government staffers, policy makers, and citizens from the middle class and those who are not as advantaged.

It's a long read (15 pages) and somewhat frustratingly incomplete in a few places, but still absolutely worth a read.

Thanks, +Greg Tracy . Given the work you've done for Madison's open data, that means a lot.
