Hiking!
We went hiking one cool but beautiful afternoon. It was cold enough that there was still ice but it wasn't too cold to be outside. Icicles! Ice! Checking out dripping rocks. We ended up chasing Quinn most of the hike like this... Silly kiddos. More "ice cas...

Snow Day!
It started snowing at about 9am this morning. I wasn't expecting it to last long, so I got the kids ready to go play. They were incredibly excited!  Snow angels! We went back in when we got too cold--it was 20 degrees, after all! But after warming up, the k...

Cute kjiddo stories from this week
I was working in the kitchen one morning when I heard Quinn start crying quite hard. But it didn't sound quite right; it sounded a bit fake but I've never heard Quinn fake cry before. I peeked around the corner into the living room and saw Quinn laying on ...

Gardening questions  -

Semi-newbie gardener here. I just tested my soil and it came back low (so low that the tests basically didn't register) on the 3 big nutrients (nitrogen, phosphate, potash). I have an all-purpose fertilizer but it's vague on instructions so I can't figure out how much of the fertilizer I need to add to amend the soil. The test came back with recommendations for amounts, but they use different concentrations of the nutrients when calculating the weight to add per 100 sqft, so I'm having a hard time making the conversion.

Anyone know of a good site or way to work out how much fertilizer to use? (And, yes, I know my soil needs a lot more help if it's that depleted, but I'm working within some constraints here.)

Well, I found help else where. I'm going to add compost rather than just fertilizer. I didn't even think about compost. I have no clue how much to add, but I'll start with 2 cubic feet for the whole 72 sqft garden and test it after it's sat for a week or two. Our last frost date isn't for another 4-6 weeks, so I've got some time to play with it.

Look what I made!  -

I finished this hat yesterday afternoon (Christmas eve). My little firecracker 4 year old girl loves it and wore it most of today. :)

I used this pattern for the hat (modified to fit a preschooler): http://thelaughingwillow.blogspot.com/2010/08/deeply-textured-hat-free-pattern-and.html
I tried out a variety of patterns for the flowers and leaves and just kind of winged it with the braids.

Bedtime problems with Aurora
I'm getting annoyed, so to keep my humor up, I'm going to record all the things Aurora needs from me before she falls asleep. All begin with her yelling, "Mommy!? MOMMY!!! MOMMYYYYYY!" She is swaddled in her special blanket from my mom, so she doesn't want ...

Happy 5th birthday, Aurora!!

Hi, I'm Regina. I discovered the wonders of loose leaf tea about a year ago. I don't know many people in real life who want to go through the "effort" of dealing with loose leaf tea so I don't have anyone to talk to about my tea!

My current favorite tea is Dragon Pearl Black tea but I also typically like standard English Breakfast tea. I prefer black teas over others, but enjoy trying others.

I don't know too many looseleaf tea drinkers, either.  I got into it in roughly 2006 when I was given some tea from Adagio.  Since then I've ingested over 70 tea names from white to puerh.  Tea is like wine... so many different things affect the taste and the kind that it will turn out to be!  Some of my favourites are Da Hong Pao, English and Irish Breakfasts, Lady and Earl Greys, Ali Shan, An Ji Bai Cha, Russian Caravan, Rize, Li Shan, Gunpowder, Lapsang Souchong, Te Ji Jasmine Pearl, Yunnan Gold and Noir, and Mei Hua.  I just polished off some Zhu Ye Qing.  Not a huge fan of Puerh or white teas, though.  Has anyone started collecting teaware as a result of the tea obsession?  I have... :: sigh ::

+William Wade and I just finished listening to Jon Scalzi's Red Shirts. What a great story. It twisted my brain as only science fiction can, had me on the edge of my seat (almost biting my nails at times), and made me a bit misty-eyed at the end. I'm pretty sure I can say that any science fiction lover would enjoy this book, whether they're familiar with Star Trek or not. It's more amusing if you're familiar with Star Trek, but it's not a prerequisite for enjoying the book.

And I have to give a shout-out to +Wil Wheaton, who did a great job reading it.
