It's official, I've switched from Canon to Sony and Zeiss. Which means Canon Fire Sale! 5D Mark III, 16-35mm f/2.8L II, 70-200mm f/4L IS, 24-105mm f/4L IS, flash, filters, extender, etc. Check out what I'm selling and tell your friends. I treat my gear like fine pieces of china. :)

It's getting hot out there, isn't it? Humid and windy was the name of the game out on the beach last weekend with huge waves and fast moving clouds, but at least I was able to walk away with something during my first real attempt of nightscape shooting this year.

This is the part of the beach on Hilton Head that the locals call "the Folly." It's an ocean inlet that carves the beach in two, filling a wide salt marsh basin with sea water, twice a day. At high tide, you can't cross safely to continue down the beach, but during low tide you can bike or walk across it.

Let's just say that I'm a little happier now that I know that the former Ocean Plaza Hotel on Tybee Island is no more. I have a personal affinity towards that hotel because of the ginormous red signage it used to light up the beach at night. In an area that is huge on sea turtle preservation, I found it quite appalling. So this month's calendar is dedicated to the fine folks who bought and run the new HotelTybee. Thank you for tearing down that sign.
This time last year I was standing on the beach in front of the hotel basking in the warm spring breeze excited that I could see the Milky Way from the beach on the east coast. Except I was equally frustrated that with the fact that the pier and water were glowing a radioactive red. I'll be back to capture this view again now that I won't have to worry about spending an hour trying to remove the red with Photoshop.

As usual, feel free to share and definitely click through to find the correct version for your desktop. They have all been sized appropriately to minimize pixel stretching. Enjoy May's flowers!

About two and a half years ago, I had the revelation that my beginner camera kit didn't have the horsepower I needed to capture the stars like I wanted. So I made the gulp-inducing decision to take what was just a small hobby and turn it up a notch by buying the full frame Canon 5D Mark III. My first real night out included an all-night drive from Phoenix to Albuquerque for work. The route I chose took me through the dark and vast areas of eastern Arizona. Around midnight, I began encroaching on the small town of Show Low, Arizona. I saw a pullout along the side of the road, so I pulled over and got out and started the next phase of my photography career.

As always, click through and find the right size for your desktop. And feel free to share this with your newsfeed. Also, I made a 2:3 ratio version to celebrate my new Surface Pro 3. Maybe there are other owners that could benefit as well.

Happy February everyone! The month that brings us cupid, groundhogs, and Super Bowls. For your desktop's pleasure, I bring you one of my favorite camping photos. While up on the Mogollon Rim in Arizona doing some technical rope rescue training for search and rescue, we threw together a campfire and then I pulled the camera out do some nightscape demonstrations. This was one of the results.

As usual, feel free to share and be sure to click through and find the right one for your desktop. It always looks best when it's not stretched because of mis-matched resolutions.

Happy New Year! A day late, but I have my reasons.... mostly centered around watching the Big 10 attempt to regain some of its former glory. And succeed mightily.

Anyways, during my most epic of photography road trips a year and a half ago, I was returning to Phoenix by way of the White Mountains of Northeastern Arizona during the tail end of a massive solar storm. Through a series of discussions with fellow Facebookers and Astronomers, it's been deduced that the green colors in this image are most likely caused by intense air glow, and is not aurora. While airglow is quite often seen in landscape astrophotographs, it's not usually the focal point. However I think this night was so incredible that it's deserving of a month of wallpaper.

As always, click through and find the right size for you. And share away!

It's almost time for the holidays so please consider supporting your favorite artists and photographers and purchase some of their work for your walls or the walls of loved ones. I know a ton of brilliant artists and photographers that are clawing out a living doing a job that tends to go unnoticed and especially underappreciated now that everyone is carrying around incredible cell phone cameras. The industry is brutal and making a living isn't easy, but I know that every little sale helps in some way.

Anyways, enough of my sales pitch for my fellow artists. We're closing out 2014 with a late morning shot from Burkes Beach of Hilton Head Island, my new home. I figured it was an appropriate way to end the year.

As usual, click through to find the right size for your desktop. Feel free to share and enjoy the holidays and coming new year!
