Our planned route to Seattle.  Carefully chosen based on availability of dog friendly hotels.  Should be fun :-)

We're just about finished the schedule for KVM Forum 2013 and just like previous years, I'm disappointed by the fact that there are far too many good talks with no humanly possible way to attend every single one of them.

If you haven't registered, make sure you do before it fills up!

We're trying to resolve an unintended licensing problem in QEMU.  One of the challenges we're facing is that one of the contributors unfortunately passed away a few years ago.  Now we're trying to contact his next of kin for permission.

That got me thinking about whether I should make provisions for the code I've written in my will that isn't owned by my employer.  I don't know that I want to just say all my copyright is CC0.  I'd like to preserve copyleft where I can.  At the same time, I've contributed to lots of different projects and not all of them are GPLv2+.

Is it possible to donate your copyright to the FSF or some other organization after death?  Has anyone made provisions in their will to deal with relicensing their copyright?

Just a reminder that IBM OzLabs is hiring in Canberra: if you're looking for cool Linux/FOSS jobs here's the wiki page for the linux.conf.au Jobs BoF:

Congrats to the Samba team!

After many years of work 4.0 is now out.
This is a great milestone!
Have fun trying it out.

Check also the release notes to learn about all features and guidance to try it out https://www.samba.org/samba/history/samba-4.0.0.html

The QEMU 1.3.0 release is now out!  This release includes PCI passthrough, virtio-rng, improves USB3.0 emulation, and much, much more.

We're heading to Seattle for Labor Day weekend.  It's 103F right now in Austin but 73F in Seattle--a full 30F (16C) difference.

This is one of the cooler summers we've had in recent times in Austin too...

While I suspect most people on G+ understand the issue, it's basically this: up until a few months ago, cell phone providers could not stop you from using a phone that you purchased from them with a different provider if you switch service.

It was only ever illegal because of an overly restrictive law that lets copyright holders have total control of a product even after you have purchased it an own it.  Among other things, this law is being used to prevent home mechanics from fixing their own cars.

The "welded hood" analogy that's supposed to incense people is now actually upon us with the likes of the Leaf and the Model S. A substantial chunk of the technology for such a car is in the control unit, and it's locked down.

I'm often asked what IBM does with KVM and why we invest.  Much to my surprise, our marketing team put together a landing page that has lots of information about what we're doing in KVM and why.  They even capitalized +QEMU correctly :-)

"""
KVM creates virtual machines as Linux processes which can then run either Linux or Windows as a guest operating system, and using a modified version of another open source module – QEMU – to provide I/O device emulation inside the virtual machine
"""

I guess they can update this part, considering that qemu-kvm and qemu were merged...

Decided to end the holiday with my first attempt at making sausage. This is the result of starting with about 10lbs of pork shoulder. From the left to right it's Boudin, Sweet Italian, and Bratwurst. While cleaning a "hank" of natural casing may have been the grossest thing I've done in the name of deliciousness I am quite pleased with the end product.

Yes, I have the problem with the stuffer and no, I don't use the blades with it :-) It looks like it's heating up as well, mostly when using the slim stuffer (works better with the large one).

Not a big deal but I'll definitely try the freezing trick next time, I've had to stop & clean the blade a few time when grinding to remove all the connective stuff wrap around it, semi-freezing might help there. Thanks !
