Judah Touro, founder of Touro Infirmary, saw a need for medical care for newly arrived German and Irish immigrants, slaves and sailors who docked in the city. From that dedication to provide quality healthcare to the community, Touro Infirmary opened as the first not-for-profit and faith-based hospital in the city August 18, 1852. What started as a cow pasture on Prytania has grown into a beautiful staple of the New Orleans community with numerous medical offerings from maternity to rehab, orthopaedics, and cancer services. Built on a tradition of excellent care, community involvement and faith, Touro continues to maintain its role as a vital institution for healthcare in our city.
