A cautionary tale from Nathalie Roy, here.  This will be of special interest to those thinking of outsourcing some of their content creation via an online service, rather than by the direct hiring of a known freelancer, one to one. It always helps to know what to look out for.

Ha, I hadn't realized they were the same outfit +Sharon Hurley Hall   Yeah, I remember people complaining in the forums about GAF, now you mention it... no wonder +Nathalie Roy had such a negative experience.  At least she was on the hiring end, not on the writing end, this time.

Dan Martell's mentorship site Clarity.fm gets big funding

"The startup encourages entrepreneurs to request a phone call with any of the hundreds of experts and mentors signed up at Clarity.fm. Advisors span from athletes to New York Times bestselling authors. Most of the advisors are experts on topics relating to startups and entrepreneurship: from marketing to raising capital."

Just spotted:
 "This Web Site is designed for and best viewed with Netscape 4.7"

Mind you, I might have read it wrong... The warning in question was a bit hard to read, what with the bright blue page background and blinking text.

This is a real list, not linkbait. You can tell because it starts with a Reality Check.  Highly recommended reading for would-be self-publishers... BUT don't be scared off. If you have something valuable to say and you believe self-publishing is the best route for spreading it, go for it. Just make sure to jump with your eyes open. That is all.

This is a wonderful analysis of the parallels between the artistic expressions of ancient days (cave painting, hieroglyphs, all that sort of thing) and the impulse for social media sites, for us, today.  Specifically, this is the only article I've read that begins to explain the fascination of Pinterest.

Introduction

Rebecca Leaman is a freelance writer and nonfiction book editor. Pathologically nice. Profoundly allergic to public speaking and the gratuitous use of phones. Can't resist an old graveyard or a new web startup.

Areas of Special Interest:

  • Web content, blogs, and social media;
  • Social history, local history and genealogy;
  • Technology for (very small) nonprofits;
  • Creativity and philosophy;
  • Beekeeping;
  • Clicker training for obedience (dogs, I mean - especially retired racing greyhounds).
