Inventory pileup continues to be a problem in many industries. Companies either write-off or give a steep discount to get rid of the excess. The root-cause of inventory problem remains in the old forecast based planning system. #supplychain can use real-time demand data to produce and ship what’s selling and not depend on the forecast.

Is it better to ban customers or ask them to pay a fee for frequent returns? Return is a service that made online retail possible. If you think about it, return mitigates customer risk, and some may be willing to pay for it. One size fits all approach to service is counterproductive - #supplychain can help companies create service levels by customer segment.

Does vertical integration provide competitive advantage? The main reason for vertical integration is to ensure supply continuity and buying critical technology. However, it distracts management attention to non-core areas, and as supply markets or technology change, the acquisition could become a burden. A better way is to partner - #supplychain can help companies deliver common goals with the help of their suppliers.

Robots were introduced in automotive manufacturing to reduce reliance on unionized labor, but the success of robots in business has been mixed. With consumers demanding more personalized services, the #supplychain design could make use of best of both worlds.

The business risk from #supplychain is real. Fire at an auto part supplier resulted in the closure of Ford factories making popular F-150 trucks thereby reducing outlook. Last year’s hurricane damaged pharmaceutical factories and it's still impacting medicine supplies. With trade war brewing, it’s time to assess supply risks in key markets.

Why innovative companies struggle to bring their products to market? Areas that make them successful also are the ones that handicap them – making changes continually by design engineers, inability to deal with long lead time items, and archaic planning and communication with partners/suppliers. #supplychain can address these areas and make scaling simpler/faster.

If Ford and GM are moving from Sedan to SUVs and trucks, why is Tesla still focused on sedans (Model 3)? Forecast, based on historical data, may not reflect consumers changing needs. #supplychain planning based on demand, not forecast, has shown to respond to market demand faster.

Apple iPhone volume has been stagnant over the last few years. The revenue and profitability are driven by price increases while Chinese smartphone manufacturers are capturing developing markets. Traditional business strategies like incrementally improving your current products can take you so far. #supplychain can provide new tools to win customers and increase revenue.
