Looks like Microsoft have been thinking and acting in this area. http://www.datacenterknowledge.com/archives/2013/11/12/microsoft-will-use-fuel-cells-create-self-powered-racks/  they are looking at data centers with methane powered fuel cells and freezing out the grid.

I suspect 3%  is an underestimate, when i run the numbers for IT consumption in the university i work at  it comes to 17% of the total energy bill,  our peers report similar http://www.goodcampus.org/files/files/75-SusteIT_Tool_Master_Results_1_4_12_final_amend.pdf   While universities are heavy ICT users, I suspect that most office based industries would be relatively similar.

It doesn't change your fundamental points but does add weight to the problem.  The continuing growth in high performance computing and big data will add further to the issue.

Nice description of the maturity of IT  in the yellow comment from "coldnebo" on http://www.reddit.com/r/programming/comments/16qbxn/if_carpenters_were_hired_like_programmers/c7ykc1m?context=2   For me enterprise architecture is about addressing some of these problems.  Trying to get some predictability in the way systems work and inter-operate  Trying to plumb them together in a predictable sensible way. Trying to turn the "shanty-town" into a real town in a similar way to how town planners do.

Yeeeehhhhaaaaaa Shaun the sheep second season is coming out on DVD!!! one of zav's favourites and one of mine too. It's so rich, with humor and action for your two year olds and then enough filmic references and subtle detail to keep the adult brain stimulated. Season 1 is a firm favourite in the Racey household. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Shaun-Sheep-Complete-2-DVD/dp/B005BPTLIQ/ref=sr_1_2?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1317571091&sr=1-2.

Seen some interesting posts on win 8, particularly the new interface. Dvorak thinks it's a big misstep http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2393269,00.asp saying that our pattern recognition ability favours icon based user interfaces. I'm not so sure, the web's success shows that a mix of graphical and text based user interface can get real traction. The next generation's eyes have been trained by the web's look and feel. It will be interesting to see how this area pans out.

Wow I'm shocked, turns out the Murdoch's and News corps execs have been deliberately lying about knowing about phone hacking practices. http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/aug/16/phone-hacking-now-reporter-letter Golly Gee i did not see that one coming.
