What's The Deal With Certification?

"Adwords Certification... Is it worth it?" That seems to be the #1 question surrounding the Certification process for the Adwords program. There are a few things to consider here.

1. You do not have to be certified to use the Adwords program. Just like you do not have to be certified to grab yourself a tank and go SCUBA diving, you can dive right into Adwords like you could the ocean. It is possible. Believe it or not, Google will let you spend your money or your clients money even if you have no idea what you're doing. That doesn't mean that either of these two ideas are advisable.
2. There are less than legit ways to get certified. There are sites that post screen grabs of the questions that you can easily find online. I've even come across a few people who will accept payment to take the exams using your sign in credentials. Both of these are very unfortunate and diminish the validity of the certification program. It takes a good deal of reading, outlining and studying to pass these tests on your own merit, but in the end the knowledge you gain will be worth it.
3. The training materials will give you a GREAT introduction into the program as well as the knowledge to avoid common and costly pitfalls. I highly recommend that anyone unfamiliar with this style of advertising goes through the certification before diving into it (or hire an Adwords Certified professional, cough cough). I understand that some people who have been using Adwords since before the certification program existed do not feel the need to take the tests, because they have real experience with the program. Nothing can replace actual working knowledge of Adwords, but especially since there is a high learning curve and ad spend is on the line, I would not advise going in blind.

In the end if you think that using Adwords is something valuable to you, your business or your clients then I would say yes to getting certified. Learning the program from the source is a great idea, there's no doubt about it. It is not easy, and it will take some time and effort on your part. Don't cheat the program though, you are really only cheating yourself or your clients. If you don't think that certification is for you, but are interested in advertising online using Adwords, I would love to let you know how I could help grow your business.

Here are a few more #adwords  tips. Follow our page for more insights!

The Power of Punctuation!
Using punctuation can be very important in creating effective text ads. I have noticed that my text ads that utilize a call to action in either Headline have a higher CTR if I use an exclamation point. Make sure you don’t over use punctuation though!!!! Or else your ad might not get approved!!!! Also, if you are optimizing for mobile, using a period at the end of "Description Line 1"is a pseudo secret. You didn’t hear it from me.

Know Your “Enemy”
Now, I’m certainly not advocating just plagiarizing your competition’s text ads, because that is lazy and irresponsible advertising. However, studying the ads in your niche that get the top spots, seeing what they do and how they do it, then putting your own spin on those ads is certainly a good strategy. What makes your business different? What do you do that they don’t do? How do you do what they do, but better?

Put in the Time
Advertising online is not as simple as “set it and forget it”. It’s an ever-evolving process that requires daily work. You should be on your accounts at least daily monitoring what is working and what is not, optimizing keywords, adding negatives, (whether those are keywords or placements) as well as many other tasks. Running campaigns online takes time, patience and hard work. Don’t let your online spend go to waste. If you don’t have the time, let a professional help.  Now, if only you could find the Google + page of a good agency… Wait a second!

Everyone has to start somewhere and the world of SEO and PPC/CPC campaigns can be pretty overwhelming. Most articles offering solutions are complex and geared towards high level strategies, but it doesn't always have to be that complicated. To help out people just beginning we compiled a small list of useful, easy to use tools that are quick and efficient.

Google Webmaster Tools: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/

You can use this website to check on the health of your website, identify errors and see information on clicks, impressions and search terms regarding your site. Also, you can track links to your site, like the all important and much talked about back links. Keeping your site healthy, your content fresh and your links plentiful will go a long way towards SEO goals.

Google Trends:
http://www.google.com/trends/

This site is a helpful tool to identify new keywords for your campaigns and ad groups for your PPC campaigns. Check out what the Top and Rising search queries are for each search term you want to target. This can help you get keyword ideas for a PPC campaign and with SEO as well.

Theses two tools are extremely helpful and come right from the mouth of the giant itself, Google.

If you use Wordpress the link below is really helpful for the health and effectiveness of your website across platforms.

Telephone Number Linker:
http://wordpress.org/plugins/telephone-number-linker/installation/

Use this Wordpress plugin to get a click to call phone number on your mobile site while keeping your number as text only when it displays on desktops or tablets. This helps your mobile customers quickly and easily contact you, and mobile optimization is a MUST going forward. Also, this plugin displays your phone number as text only on desktop/tablets instead of creating an error message when it is clicked on, keeping you safe from bad links and pesky penalties.
