Very interesting, Tommi, and I look forward to (later today) preparing a detailed response from a hockey coach's perspective.

Google+ is the only social media venue where I feel like I'm working in a closet, or maybe the world has ended, and no one is even out there.  :/

As one who has been teaching the game for over 40-years, let me share a couple of thoughts...

1) I think the best way to "teach" the game to new players is by helping them master the boimechanically correct way to perform ANY movement.  That goes for shooting technique, the skating stride, and a good number of other movements.

2) With proper mechanics mastered, it is later usually easy for players to make adaptations that might actually be more effective under game conditions.

Okay, so about shooting off the so-called "wrong foot"...  Goaltenders ready themselves a lot on predicting what an attacker is going to do.  And, after seeing thousands and thousands of shots over many years, most experienced goalers expect a shooter to pull the trigger as he shifts weight to the "correct foot".  Little wonder a lot of hockey's top scorers actually shoot of the wrong foot, oftentimes surprising the netminder before he or she is totally prepared.  (Many Russians and other Europeans came to North American hockey being able to fire in the middle of a stickhandling movement, in the middle of a cross-over step, etc.  And something like that also unnerved a lot of North American goalies.)

Bottom line:  If you have a little one, teach him or her proper mechanics.  Once those are learned, follow Jeremy's advice so your youngster can be far more dangerous.

If you noticed that older players on your Junior hockey team didn't get the help they wanted with college or pro connections, maybe it's time YOU look elsewhere...

Story

Master Hockey Coach, skills analyst, author and video producer known around the hockey world as "Coach Chic".
Introduction
If we were all born to do something, there's little doubt God put me on this planet to teach and coach.  I love working with hockey players -- of all ages, I love helping their parents, and I especially love advising other hockey coaches.

And, if we do what we love long enough, we become pretty good at it.  In particular, I'd rate myself as one of the tops in the world when it comes to troubleshooting hockey problems, and I know I've saved a number of players from quitting the game just because I saw a skill or game-playing deficiency others had missed.

Then, while I'm a bit old fashion in my personal life, my rather outside-the-box approach to hockey has helped me pioneer numerous hockey related training methods and inventions.  So did it bring me to the Internet very early-on, so that I am now able to share ideas with like minded hockey folks the world over.
