Does your town allow elected officials to participate in a pension program? Good luck undoing it if they do.
Grant Wehrli doesn't want a pension for serving as a Naperville city councilman, but thanks to his fellow council members it looks like he'll get one. And he won't be alone. Some 42 former suburban aldermen, mayors and clerks together receive more than $200,000 a year combined for once holding elected office.

A look into the state's school report card grading system and why many more suburban schools are failing.
More than 600 schools statewide joined the ranks of those failing to meet standards, according to the released today by the Illinois State Board of Education. Nearly 600 schools made the grade, while 3,169 are deemed failures, according to the state. A change in the testing and grading of those tests is behind the decline.

Here's a look at how the state's sin taxes are doing and what they do to other tax rates. It might surprise you.
While state lawmakers continue to increase "sin taxes" on booze, cigarettes and gambling, revenues from the so-called “sin taxes” aren't keeping pace. At $1.95 billion, the state generated almost the same amount in tax revenue from these vices in 2012 as it did in 2003. “If you don't think this will affect you, it almost always does in the long run because the money almost never comes through like they think it will,” one expert said.

Do you think Cook County's resources are being deployed properly here?
A crackdown by Cook County on illegal cigarette sales has netted the county $1.8 million in fines, Board President Toni Preckwinkle announced Thursday. Stores in Des Plaines, Barrington and Arlington Heights were among those cited.

How a state inspector kept shirking his duties while under investigation and got to keep his job for more than a year.
Even after his supervisors at the Illinois Department of Labor discovered Chuck Drager fudged a safety inspection report for a ski lift at Villa Olivia in Bartlett, he was allowed to continue working for more than a year. Drager not only received almost $100,000 in pay while being investigated, but he continued to falsify safety reports, state inspectors said. He also sometimes left work early for his side gig as a singer.

Battle brews in Warrenville over individual property rights and homeowners association rules.
When Shawna Coronado went out to weed and saw someone had painted gang symbols on the back of her fence, she cried. “I spend a lot of my time working to beautify the community and talking to others about how we can all help each other make the world a better place,” Coronado said. Coronado enlisted the help of a local artist to help not just paint over the gang signs, but to put up a message of her own. But Summerlakes Homeowners Association does...

Golf fans going to the BMW championship have these folks to thank for their good time.
While much of the focus at the BMW Championship at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest is on the golfers, the unsung heroes of the event are the 1,600 volunteers. This year's volunteer staff comes from 23 states and two foreign countries, Knapp said, though the majority are from the Midwest. “We have a good number of North Shore residents,” she said.
