Everyone understands that the amount of data being produced nowadays is growing in leaps and bounds. And though the numbers are mind-boggling, people understand intuitively that something significant is happening. So, for example, the wholesale migration of media such as video to digital formats, the personalisation effect individuals experience with web sites such as Amazon, and the explosion of “apps” to cater to smartphone users. This trend now has a name, Big Data, and it is increasingly clear that it is changing the landscape of our lives - and nowhere more rapidly than in the world of customer service.
Gartner defines Big Data as, “high volume, high velocity and high variety information assets that demand cost-effective, innovative forms of information processing for enhanced insights and decision making”.
