Just finished watching this week's episode of #WDYTYA and realized I never found more info on some ancestors whose names appear in an encyclopedia of the Underground Railroad. It's been at least a year since I made the discovery. My son found the book in the University library where he went to school at the time and made a copy of the entry, but it didn't really say anything about what they did. I just googled my ancestor's name along with the words Underground Railroad, and found this page. 3 photos accompany the article. I'm floored! This is awesome! And it was posted only 4 weeks ago!!

#familyhistory
More than 150 years ago, before the Civil War and when United States still had slavery in the Southern States, there was a secret network of humanitarian activists in the Northern States who took it upon themselves to make it possible for escaping slaves make their way to freedom in Canada. This organization came to be known as the Undergound Railroad.

that was a shocking tid bit, wasn't it? wow! It really did bring to light just how dangerous it was to be involved in it. It amazes me how so much can be known now of something that was so secret then.

THANKS for looking!
I already packed my books, we get the moving truck tomorrow morning, so hopefully I can dig them out next week and see what I actually have. This may be my escape from unpacking! The one note book I have easy access to is mostly emails and photos. I know Dad and his cousin Valerie have done tons of searching and speculating and inquiring, even tried to trace a Martha J. (daughter of Silas and Nancy I think) who seemed to disappear as well. Dad's memory of what family has told them varies. My dad was 14 years younger than his only sibling, so he was a 'babe' when others were older and telling stories. I'm not even sure if they ever found a birth record for Silas, just going by other records for placing him.
One letter I'm looking at says they have a possible match in 1860 in Sussex County/ Wantage, Deckertown for (Spelling is all diff)
96-Silas Van Eder 28 farm laborer (b. c. 1832)
Nancey 27 housekeeping (born c. 1833)
James 7
Harmon 2
Martha J. 4/12
Value of personal estate - $50.00 No real estate.

They suspect Silas died circa 1862-1870, "NJ archives unable to to locate a death record for Silas in Passaic or Sussex Co. "

There is more here too, but I'm not trudging through it all.
There is lore that our Harman (son of Silas) was raised by a man named John Sisco, BUT we find him in 1870 with Abram Cahill family in West Milford. I've asked Dad about this, and he can't explain it. All I can figure is somewhere the name got passed on wrong, or something.. Harman was a mason and it's said he learned it from the man who 'raised' him. Cahill is listed in that census as a farmer.

I'm not sure where Dad comes up with the Sanders as a possible alternate name for Hannah. I don't think we ever learned anything about her family.

There are just too many 'holes' in the tree, too many unanswered questions. Sure would be nice to solve some while Dad is still here to hear the answers. Cousin Valerie now lives in Canada, and raising small kids on a farm, so she doesn;t get much work on this done anymore. When she gets to the library she'll poke around for a few and let us know if she finds anything that might be a clue.  Sometimes I think we need fresh eyes, but I get so confused every time I try, I think it's because I've heard so many stories, but mostly unconnected. Dad and Valerie had already been swapping back and forth info and stories and I came in on the middle of it, really hard to wipe the brain clean. I was raising young uns/teenagers when I came in on it, so couldn't dedicate more brain to it either.... anytime I try to go at it by myself I can only get so far then get distracted or discouraged... lol.

+Jenna Mills  and +JL Beeken here are some charts I had to make myself. Traditional charts just don't show the real picture with some of these families.  All these charts got rough drafted in pencil as I worked through the info and sorted it out. Once I felt like I had it figured out, I redid them in sharpie so I could scan them.
I never claim 100% accuracy, but from the info I had available, I'm pretty sure. The first two charts cover my Quakers.

lol Jenna. Hope not, but if you have Quakers, you might.
+Mike Martin I'm in that group,  unless there is more than one. My husband has way more history here than I do.

YAY! My genealogy blog reeled in another distant cousin! Got a message on my facebook photography page today, which is linked from genealogy blog. When Thanksgiving feasting winds down, I'll be looking into my Barber/Perrine line again for him. Any genealogists have Perrine ancestors in NJ? Sure would like to knock down a brick wall.
