Completely random, but sort of turned out nice:

1) Grabbed a round piece of copper and polished it to reasonable luster,

2) Sketched a simple vector pattern and printed a vinyl sticker (vinyl cutters are damn cheap by now, and are pretty fun for a lot of reasons),

3) Applied this sticker to the piece of copper,

4) Placed the thing in ammonium persulfate (a common and fairly user-friendly PCB etchant) to dissolve some of the copper in the exposed regions,

5) Applied a thin coat of epoxy, dyed black, over the still-masked surface,

6) Pulled the stickers off.

A similar approach should also work for silver. Best of all, no real skill required!
