The star attraction of Avignon is the Palais des Papes (Palace of the Popes), a vast castle of significant historic, religious and architectural importance. It is one of the largest and most important medieval Gothic buildings in Europe.

The Papal palace is a cavernous complex of buildings, with minimal furnishings. You should watch the videos detailing what was constructed when to get a better feel for the place. The rooms are impressive, with most of the painted details having deteriorated due to age. A most medieval experience. The adjacent gardens provide striking views over the Rhone. There are a few stairways that go down to the other parts of town.
