Exciting News! A new Babytalk research project has been awarded an IU collaborative research grant!

The project will bring together Babytalk researchers and IU-Bloomington computer/cognitive scientists to apply cutting edge eye tracking and data integration and mining technology to perform fine-grained analyses of communicative interactions between infants with hearing loss and their parents during play sessions and to discover which kinds of communicative interactions are most successful for promoting language development.

We will be recruiting infants and toddlers with and without hearing loss for this project. Stay tuned for more information regarding participation!

The mythical flattening of global temperatures over the last decade explained in one graph.

Look at the La Nina years. They are always relatively cool. The last five years have consisted of three La Nina years, including the last two. These three La Nina years, although relatively cooler than El Nino and "other" years of the past decade are the three hottest La Nina years on record. Moreover, all of the top 10 hottest years on record (since 1880) have occurred in the last 14 years. Thus, the claim that the world has stopped warming is completely without merit.

There I sat Superbowl watching, in delight of the 9er walloping
From hits of purple and black whose awesome plays did score;
This with glee I sat enjoying, with cold beer my mood outstanding
Even with Ngata knee spraining and power outing they fell short
And with younger Harbaugh whining and Friscoinians hoping for something more
It shall come to them, ah, nevermore!

The evidence that humans are causing earth-damaging climate change is at least an order of magnitude greater than the evidence that doing something about it would be harmful to the economy. At this point, it is completely irrational to not take serious steps toward reducing our carbon emissions.

"The evidence that humans are causing earth-damaging climate change is at least an order of magnitude greater than the evidence that doing something about it would be harmful to the economy."

It sounds very powerful, it sounds like something a testosterone-loaded politician would say on his election campaign. It is a statement with balls! It is clear that the person who has the guts to say this must be truly confident about what he is saying.

But it is also of some importance whether it is actually correct. Is it? What is the evidence for A, what is the evidence for B, how do we quantify it, and how are the resulting different by an order of a magnitude?

Story
Introduction
I'm an associate professor the Philip F. Holton Scholar of otolaryngology–head and neck surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine.  I received a PhD in Psychology from Johns Hopkins University with Peter Jusczyk, PhD.  During my graduate training, my research focused on how normal-hearing, typically developing infants segment words from fluent speech and recognize words across different talkers.  In 2000, I constructed the first laboratory to investigate the speech perception and language skills of deaf infants who receive cochlear implants.  Since then, my work has investigated the effects of early auditory deprivation and subsequent cochlear implantation on speech discrimination, attention to speech, sensitivity to language-specific properties of speech, word learning, and general cognitive skills in deaf infants and toddlers. My work has been supported by the NIDCD, the Deafness Research Foundation, and the American Hearing Research Foundation.
