I read "Profiles of the Future", written by Arthur C. Clarke ~1974 in which he describes a time when every human being can be reached, no matter where they are, by a unique number (like a telephone number) and communicate on a phone with no wires.
That was one of the most memorable of things he predicted in that book. I first read it about 1980-1981 and again about 10 years ago (after the birth of the Internet).
