I would say that the cherry tree is nice! As known in China, the ink used for calligraphy could be also a very good tool for sumi-e. In fact, for beginners they usually have just one kind of ink for both art forms. Only later when they start doing more sophisticated art creations they have higher requirements on inks ;-)
I haven't played with sumi-e in months, and I couldn't find my proper chinese ink sticks (which is definitely best for sumi-e...) so instead I toyed with chinese calligraphy ink. The below result was disastrous since that ink does not thin very well.

Also, English calligraphy doesn't work very well with chinese calligraphy / sumi-e brushes.

It was a nice 'become awake' and start the day exercise though, and knocked off two items from my to-do list today, being art practice and calligraphy practice...

Rebecca Blain, the painting is unconventional but still beautiful. The colors are nice!
This morning's practice at sumi-e.

I really do not like these black chinese inks for sumi-e. Way too hard to control. Mumblegrumblemumble. Need to find my sticks of ink.

I used red and silver indian inks, white acrylic (I'm out of regular white ink...) and chinese calligraphy ink.
