Anybody having issues with the Metro version of IE11 on Windows 8.1? I've had sites completely broken but every so often they work properly without me changing anything. Does anybody have an idea why that happens?

I guess that the user agent for ie 11 does not pretend to be ie at all, so in cases where the server is serving different code for versions of ie, it is no longer doing this for ie 11.. That said ie11 is very standards complient.

Quick question for the veterans out there: do media queries work if you throw all of the @media declarations into a single external CSS file? I'm working on a project with this kind of restriction.

Thanks!

ah. I just link them out to their respective CSS depending on the screen width. makes life so much easier. :) So three different CSS files for each width.

Hi guys! I suppose this question would be best asked here.

How wide is a typical website? Should I be aiming to create a responsive web page for a primarily desktop-accessible site? Or should it just be a little flexible with a max- and min-width?

I'm not certain whether this is even a big deal or not, but it would be nice to know a good ballpark to begin my designs with.

I agree with +Karol Ciesielski look at the screen resolutions used in your country, then build to satisfy 95% of them. For me it is no wider than 1024px..

Another shooting at Virginia Tech.

Tragic. Our hearts go out to those who have suffered.
Officials at Virginia Tech have lifted a lockdown on campus after a police officer and another person were shot dead.

Right before the end of the semester too, that poor university. Saddening news for a saddening time.

Question for the veterans: can I support Retina screens by loading a high-res image and letting the browser scale them down on non-Retina screens? I want to find a simple solution without having to do complicated JS switching or media queries.

Ha well that should help if mediawiki is already doing some sizing work for you. I personally would want ftp access to the backend though, that way you can customize things.

General question: since I develop in a Windows environment, I find myself using Notepad++ for all my HTML/CSS development.

I have a client who is interested in learning how to make minor adjustments to HTML as his site updates, but he works on Mac. Is there a good, simple HTML editor (with syntax highlighting) for Macs out there?

Hi guys! I'm a greenhorn in the web development world, so I hope to learn a lot from you guys.

I was asked by a university professor to design a research lab website for him. Do you have any suggestions for good CMS for small, rather static web pages?

Fully agreed with +MaryAnn Pfeiffer . Install Joomla on your own computer/localhost with XAMPP or MAMP or WAMP to develop and learn. If you still can not manage to plan, you can contact me via email if you want, obviously it is free help.
