I have always realized that gaming and gambling comprise one of the largest businesses in the State of Florida. As such, this market needs to be regulated like a business. Today the new Gaming Compact between the Seminoles and our state will be voted on in the Regulated Industries Committee. I hope that we can reach an agreement that protects not only the businesses but the people of Florida.

Two-year old little Haile Brockington was tragically left to die in a sweltering day care van in 2010. An inexpensive alarm would have prevented this tragedy. I am proposing today a bill named in her honor, the "Haile Brockington Act," that would require day care vans and other child transport vehicles statewide to install alarms to protect our little ones. Make sure to show your support for Haile's bill so that we can save the lives of children in the memory of Haile.

Two significant bills of mine passed committee today, one concerning FAU's medical school and the other for our Florida veterans.

We all recognize that there is a need for more doctors in South Florida. Having a medical school in our area will provide our community with needed local doctors. Senate Bill 878 adds FAU to the list of schools that are eligible for medical faculty certifications. As of 2015, FAU had moved from the 10th to the 6th best performing public university in Florida. FAU deserves eligibility for these certifications, and our community deserves more local doctors.

We must explore all avenues of support for our veterans. The Florida Veterans Foundation is the direct link for help for our veterans, yet it receives no state funds, and survives with voluntary contributions. Senate Bill 1688 allows for Floridians to voluntarily contribute to the Florida Veterans Foundation when filling our applications for vehicle registration. Definitely a plus for our state and for our veterans.

If you support these measures please make sure to share your support!

Less than a few hours after a joint press conference that I held with Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the "campus carry bill" was declared dead in Tallahassee. This is a tremendous victory for gun control advocacy in our state, and our public college and university campuses will remain safe as a result.

If you're a bicyclist in Florida you are more likely to be killed in a biking accident here than in any other state. In 2015 our state had the highest rate of bicycling deaths of any other state, with more than half of those fatalities occurring at night. That is why I am proposing a bill that would call for installing solar-powered in-road lights in urban bike paths. This measure would make our state a safer environment for bicyclists and improve our appalling reputation in this department.

Reverend Martin Luther King voiced a message that brought together an entire nation. No matter how old his message is it will always remain ageless. Today is a reminder to honor him, his memory and most importantly his message.

The closer you live to a casino, the higher the likelihood that you or someone in your family will be impacted by gambling addiction. Last week I chaired a committee on problems in gambling, and this morning I appeared on WPTV's "To The Point" to discuss how gambling affects so many Florida families and my proposed plans to confront this problem. This is one of of my priorities this upcoming session.

Signed 50 years ago, the Voting Rights Act is still needed today. Minorities and other disadvantaged groups may not face the same barriers they did in 1965, but they still face too many barriers. Let’s make sure everyone has a voice. #VRA50

“We’re the largest county…and the most diverse. It’s that diversity, that difference, that makes kids subject to others laughing at them and bullying them around…What I need to do in the state senate is further this conversation with other legislators and policy makers…so I can use Palm Beach as a model.” http://wlrn.org/post/palm-beach-county-lowers-bullying-rate
