Welcome to 2016, and one political party's presidential nominee used Ronald Reagan as the inspiration at her convention. The other harkened back to the fearful days of the first "America First" movement in the shadow of Hitler's rise, the walled-off America promises of Senator Smoot and Representative Hawley, and the hot-button racial rhetoric (if we judge by his approving tweets) of David Duke.

This is not an America I expected to be covering ... or living in. It's a world in which the optimistic legacies of Ronald Reagan and Franklin D. Roosevelt and Bill Clinton and George W. Bush unite against the dark knight of the new American order, Donald Trump.
Did I step into a time machine and wake up in 1984? “USA. USA. USA.” “We are the greatest country on this planet,” said retired Marine Corps General John Allen. American fla…

Day 2 #DemConvention  analysis featuring cameo appearances by Ron Fournier, Jonathan Allen, Frank Luntz and Donny Ferguson.
His voice is weaker. His right hand occasionally trembles. His stamina for 90-minute orations is no longer Castro-esque. (Then again, neither is Fidel’s.) But Bill Clinton showed Tuesday nigh…

What does Hillary Clinton need to accomplish at the Democratic convention? Improve her standing with blue-collar whites, young voters and undecided voters who dislike both major-party nominees. That's a start.
Donald Trump is the most disliked presidential nominee in the history of scientific polling. But most national polls still show him barely trailing in his unconventional outsider bid for the presid…

My analysis of the third night of the Republican convention. Ted Cruz's acceptance speech.
The 2020 Republican presidential race began on a fractious and flummoxing night in Cleveland, one day after a deeply and bitterly divided party formally selected its 2016 nominee. Four of the most …

Can't read Finnish? Here's a copy of my analysis of Donald Trump's populist rebellion and its impact on the Reagan coalition, translated into English.
When I moved to Beijing in 2013 to explain global best practices in journalism to a diverse group of Global Business Journalism Program students, I had not expected that I also would frequently be …

The Global Business Journalism Program at Tsinghua University is a unique opportunity for students from around the world to study in China and to learn about the rapidly evolving global economy. I've learned so much as I've taught in GBJ.
A new beginning. There’s nothing like the first day of class each semester. Meeting smart young students who are eager to learn. My 35 years as a reporter were exciting and eventful, but my t…

A day of powerful speeches and powerful images. Hillary Clinton may be a flawed candidate, but the third day of her nominating convention was close to flawless.
The dichotomy of America is apparent at the two national political conventions. Hope vs. fear. Love vs. anger. Experience vs. political newcomers. Diversity vs. shades of white. Meryl Streep vs. Sc…

Michelle Obama delivered a fine speech, and Bernie Sanders was gracious. Will it help Hillary Clinton? My Day One analysis.
Americans claim to want their politicians to be “authentic.” Even if the authenticity comes by way of Hollywood (like Ronald Reagan’s aw-shucks, cowboy hero persona) or Madison Av…

Donald Trump's acceptance speech was a lot less like the optimistic addresses of Ronald Reagan, John F. Kennedy, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, and a lot more like the apocalyptic vision of William Jennings Bryan.
At their best, presidential nominating conventions are about inspiration and optimism. Ronald Reagan’s “springtime of hope” in Dallas, 1984. Bill Clinton’s bridge to the 21s…

My analysis of the second day of the Republican National Convention.
Day 2 at the Republican National Convention was billed as jobs night: “Make America Work Again,” in Trump-speak. But there only seemed to be one job that convention speakers cared much …

Republican presidential candidates have been invoking Ronald Reagan's memory with great regularity during the 2016 campaign. But how similar are they actually to their icon? Here's what Reagan believed about immigration policy.
Ronald Reagan was all about tearing down walls, as in Berlin. But he also was against building them, as in Mexico. With all of the heated political rhetoric about Mexico today, it’s a good ti…

Breaking news: I write about ten cliches that should be banned from presidential campaign coverage. This could be a real game-changer.
The 2016 presidential candidates are criss-crossing New Hampshire as they enter the home stretch before the first-in-the-nation primary. Polls show the horse race is too close to call. With candi...
