Excellent article.

"All the good stuff we grow — tomatoes, strawberries, lettuce — has gotten continually more bland. This has been measured. They have become diluted of nutrients, as well. As we selected crops for agronomic traits like yield, shelf life and disease resistant, we never selected for flavor. And we lost flavor as a result. It's reverse evolutionary pressure."

I remember going to strawberry farms to pick strawberries, which we paid the growers directly for.  The fruit was typically small and usually sweet.  Now strawberries in the store are nearly the size of apples, and tart or bland.  They are rarely sweet.  I'm sure they survive the semi trips to the packaging plant and then to the store better...but they taste bad.

Even worse, strawberry flavoring doesn't taste like what actual strawberries used to taste like either.  It seems we lost our point of reference in many ways on what things should taste like.

Men with precancerous prostatic lesions taking a combination of lycopene, selenium, and green tea supplements were shown to have higher incidence of prostate cancer at re-biopsy (http://1.usa.gov/1JouS3m). If these supplements seem to boost prostate cancer risk what about the risk of taking a daily multivitamin? Click to see video:
