If you know that you hold unpopular opinions, you are much less likely to report them honestly to polls. But if they ask you who your friends will vote for...

Read on for excellent coverage by British Royal Society Research Digest of new techniques for how to guess the actual outcome of elections – the work of SFI Prof Mirta Galesic, SFI Omidyar Fellow Marion Dumas, & their colleagues from the University of Leeds, Carnegie Mellon, and USC:

"A recent study by researchers at the University of Michigan and the Santa Fe Institute found that online daters of both genders tend to pursue prospective mates who are on average 25% more desirable than they are—presumably not a winning strategy."

Now happening at SFI: scientists converge for a working group on “Dynamic Multi-System #Resilience in Human #Aging,” studying the interactions of #physiology and #psychology on the complex, multidimensional phenomenon of aging – no longer understood as simple growing "frailty," new opportunities to collect data from wearable technologies reveal that aging is far more dynamic and changing than we thought...

"The data agree with a model [with] two concurrent processes. The concept of transitions between cell cycle stages as decisional processes integrating multiple inputs can affect the way we think of the cell cycle in general."

"People are less inhibited talking about other people’s behavior than revealing their own. And potential voters whose circles are predominantly on the other side are more likely to change their minds."

Early-career scientists come together at SFI this week to imagine a collective vision for the future of ecological networks – an inquiry that's grown rapidly over the last decades. Current analyses explore topics ranging from plant-pollinator relationships to socio-ecological systems.

The working group is committed to exploring new applications for network-level insights as well as improving feedback between field researchers, data scientists, theorists, and ecological engineers.
