Can translation be "standardized"? Only time will tell.

Good advice for the financial phobic.
Small business owners, entrepreneurs, and contractors are not taxed automatically at the source of their income and come tax season could end up owing a significant amount to the Canada Revenue Agency if they didn’t plan accordingly throughout the year

No lunch plans? Check out the Lunch Bunch today featuring +Dustin W. Stout and hosted by +Ray Hiltz

What goes into choosing an image for our blog or social media posts?

The whole world of visuals and social media is huge but the #RayBunch  has never shied away from squeezing big topics in our 30 minute show.

To help us cut to the core issues of the science and art of choosing that right image, I reached out to the guy who is as generous as he is genius in his knowledge of visuals -+Dustin W. Stout

Evidence of his generosity can be noted by the fact that there is no "i" in the eponymous name of his website: http://dustn.tv/

Dustin has shared many articles and appeared in many HOAs to share his opinion about branding, colours, fonts and other visual aspects on content marketing.

My reason for inviting him here today is to discuss, along with +Jessica Dewell +B.L. Ochman +Scott Scowcroft +Randy Bowden and you, how we can make more informed decisions on what imagery we want to represent our content.

Are images necessary on blogs?
Do we need to put text on images?
What effects do our choice of colours (or lack of) have?
How important are video thumbnails?

Notice I didn't mention copyright issues. There are many great posts circulating that can help you with that like Dustin's:
Best Places to Find Free Images Onlinehttp://goo.gl/DpT54b

In short, if you don't own it or are certain you're allowed to use it - don't.

We'll be sharing many image resources in our regular LunchBunch Take-Out segment and in the event, so keep an eye out. (not literally - setting your notifications will do fine.)

If you've already chosen images for your post, here's a very helpful post +Dustin W. Stout just had published on +Social Media Examiner:

How to Optimize Social Media Images - http://goo.gl/zYhH2H

Introduce Yourself - Tell Us About Your Courses  -

Hello,
I had the opportunity to hear Mark Timberlake at the Lunch Bunch hangout yesterday. As a university lecturer (translation, entrepreneurship and writing), I have long wanted to develop and teach workshops in a different way and add content that doesn't fit neatly into the traditional university environment. Since my field is translation, my "classroom" is potentially global. Online teaching platforms can bridge geographical distance. Joining this community seemed the best place to start. Looking forward to learning, sharing ideas and supporting the community.

See what the experts have to say about saying you're an expert. Lunchtime hangouts with +Ray Hiltz are always time well-spent.

Do you have trouble calling yourself an expert?
If you're in business, showing expertise is an essential part of building authority, reputation and ultimately trust - all important factors on being found on the web.

This is a conversation that goes around and around in social media. While it's widely accepted that referring to oneself as a "guru" is pretentious, being an expert is a brand necessity.

After all, who will purchase a product or service from someone who isn't clear about their expertise.

Many are reticent to call themselves experts either because they they lack personal confidence, don't own a "niche" or, if they're in social media, believe no one can be an expert due to ever-changing technology.

Join us and add your questions and comments to those of the #RayLunchBunch  as we explore the challenges of defining your expertise and niche online.

Be sure to stick around for the last 5 minutes of the show when we'll be serving our Lunch Bunch Take-Out - tips and links to resources relating to the day's topic.

Introduction

I am a published writer and experienced translator, and an enthusiastic teacher, coach and public speaker. An egghead with a side of ham, all of my professional activities have given me a lifelong licence to learn, a very-important-pass to knowledge, for which I am eternally grateful. Adept at and keenly interested in social media, a range of platforms give me a powerful and effective way to share ideas and collaborate.

In all areas, I tend to be curious, fearless and self-directed. Willing to take on challenges, I have had my share of failures and disappointments, but developed the ability to learn from the toughest experiences and apply the lessons learned to the next objective.

Most recent and, by far the most daunting, challenge: Marketing my first novel, Wasteland, available for Kindle on Amazon. Yes, you're right, that's a plug!

WRITING

It's always and ever been about the writing.

  • avid blogger
  • voracious reader and researcher
  • creative writer, novelist
  • brand and traditional journalist with a special interest in language matters

TRANSLATION

For me, translation is a natural extension of writing.

  • marketing, web content, white papers and research
  • transcreation and adaptation
  • social sciences
  • arts and culture
  • internal communications and policy
  • speeches

TEACHING | COACHING | PUBLIC SPEAKING

Thanks to my students and audiences, whether in a group or one-on-one context, teaching, coaching and training, and public speaking keep me honest.

  • entrepreneurship
  • social media
  • language matters
  • writing
  • English (advanced speaking and writing for non-English speakers)

Bragging rights
I love my life.
