- The last family had moved away from our small village just last week. My only reason for being here was to remove the worn, wooden signs.
Everyone was gone now. The buildings had been torn down, the fields had their last plowing, and now we leave it to be reclaimed by nature.
It was the start of winter today. A time of quiet stillness. Our town was as dead as the cold air and snow.
But winter also signaled a change. It was an ending, but also a beginning. Those who had moved had started new lives in the big cities near us.
I will leave here for the last time, this winter, and as Spring comes, I shall see what is in store for me.Sep 29, 2014
- I hated seeing him pee on something so
beautiful, but when he came out from behind the tall tree I could see that in his grown boyhood he was also ashamed and had only gone there for cover. In truth, it was my presence here that caused that tree to receive his excretions. When he entered the car again and as we drove away, it was as if the tree forgave me and said, "No worries, we've co-existed with human liquids for thousands of years."Sep 29, 2014
- The first snowfall of the season was usually a gentle covering of the ground. Today the snow started as a torrent of furry flakes and worked itself into a frenzy. As I tried to cross the wet and mushy snow that was piling up I kept stumbling hoping \i was going in the right direction. With the wind gusting it was difficult to see very far ahead. I was traveling on memory. Furry shadows were dancing in my line of vision but it was the earthy voice that caught my attention from above.
"We have been waiting for you."Sep 29, 2014
- When I +1 stuff in these threads, it means "Thank you for giving me something new to read!"
That said, I did dig your little scene, . I like a little metaphysical mysticism in my military actions scenes :)
And I am a huge fan of the last-line quip. As, many, many of my story snippets can attest to :D
I probably should tell people more what I like about their stories on these, but I have a fear that if I start doing that, then people will figure out that I still have barely any idea what I'm doing with all this writing stuff!Oct 2, 2014
The old said to the young, “Listen carefully to the wind, and be sure to bend her way.”
The young said to the old, “I will bend which ever way I please.”
“So foolish,” said the old as it rattled its leaves, “that will be a hard lesson indeed.”
When the wind came whistling, the old one bent to her call. But the young laughed and said, “Why, it’s barely nothing at all.”
Of course, wind loves to dance.
Soon the young timber shivered and shook, and teetered and tottered until finally it cracked. Then a groan was let loose as the old bent all the way back.
Digging roots deep to hold fast, the old steadied the young through the end of the blast.
And now two trees grow similar, and bend to the wind whenever she calls.Oct 25, 2014
