Rare Antique Persian Veramin Rug in a Classic Safavid Design

Circa 1890,
Northern Persia,
Wool on Cotton Foundation,
Size 2.16m x 1.40m

This rug is a rare example of pieces made in a small agricultural area south of what was to become the future capital Tehran.

The rug has an archaic look about since the design does not appear to be symmetrical. This harks to an earlier age of the Safavid period when such designs were used in often larger and specially commissioned pieces. Veramin generally also produced pieces in the ‘mina khani’ motif; so this example with its beautiful lighter blue colour palette demonstrates the lesser known aspects of classic Persian carpet weaving in the late Qajar period.

Antique Persian silk and Metal Brocade Rug

Circa 1920,
Qum - Northern Persia,
Silk and Metal Woven on Pure Silk Foundation,
Size 1.46m x 1.04m

In terms of the collection previewed by Ornamentum this rug more than any other perhaps exemplifies all of the splendour associated with carpet weaving in Persia throughout the ages of the 16th and 20th centuries.

It has been woven in one of the most technically testing methods of weaving known with silk-metal brocade upon a silk foundation. This was a notoriously arduous and expensive process in which to weave rugs; indeed most of the greatest of Safavid carpets dotted around in the great private and public collections around the world are woven in such a way.

To add to this rug’s appeal the design is that of a ‘prayer rug’ variant with a central vase farmed between the pillars and regal peacocks (the emblem of the Shah) flanking on either side.

Exceptionally Fine ‘Hagighi’ Tabriz Rug

North-West Iran
Circa 1960
Size 2.21m x.1.42m
Wool on Cotton Foundation

This is made by one of the most famous of master-weavers in the latter part of the 20th century ‘Ustad Hagighi’. The rug is typical of those woven in his workshops; since the favoured template of design used was that of the famed ‘Ardebil’ carpet in the V & A Museum in London.

This rug is of astonishing quality since it has almost a million knots per square metre. It also has the most lustrous of ‘Kurk’ wool which gives the patina of a silk rug.

Rare Antique Silk Kashan 'Prayer Rug'

Central Persia,
Circa 1890,
Size 2.05m x 1.35,
Silk on Silk Foundation

Pieces of this outstanding quality have always acquired the greatest value in-part due to the finesse demonstrated by the weaver and the quality of materials used; but more over due to the highest aesthetic sensibility on offer in such surviving pieces.

Few pieces from this era are available today in such a remarkable condition of preservation  and fewer still resonate with such rich striking original colours.
