Schneier points to a good article arguing that manned submarines are about to become obsolete and (extrapolating from the argument in the article a bit) be replaced by underwater drones.

The core of the argument is that it's becoming easier to detect submarines and too expensive to improve their stealth. The article describes the possibility of manned submarines as underwater carriers of drones, but I wonder if more likely is large numbers of cheap, small, unmanned, and slow moving underwater drones, no carriers at all. It's going to be nearly impossible to detect any significant fraction of small drones that mostly float on currents or sit on the bottom waiting for instructions.
