"_Pretty Woman_ is the Fifty Shades of Grey of its generation, reinforcing the dominant narrative around woman as property and sexual object and grossly misrepresenting how sex workers are portrayed."

I was six when this came out, and I didn't understand what a prostitute was, but I did understand that there was something creepy about the way she didn't want to kiss him. Movies had already taught me that strangers are forced to spend time together for all kinds of spurious reasons and that that always ends with them falling in love or being best friends, so I didn't question that part at all.

I didn't particularly care for the movie, but it's interesting to hear how that went down.
Gillian Flynn discusses the challenges and joys of adapting her workone of the most talked-about novels in recent yearsinto a screenplay.

Me, talking about The 100. Please don't get cancelled, show! #the100
Written by Katherine Murray. Bisexual protagonists, scenes that pass the Bechdel Test, women making choices that drive the action of the story – I'm still the only person who watches The 100, but, boy, do I enjoy it when I do. Eliza Taylor and Alycia Debnam Carey star and kiss in The 100 ...

If anything could almost convince me to watch Agents of SHIELD again, this would be it.
Drea de Matteo will be joining Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. this year as a superpowered enemy with an axe to grind against the titular agency. De Matteo, who won an Emmy for her performance as Adriana La Cerva on The Sopranos, will be joining the ABC comic book show as Karla Faye Gideon, apparent

True story: I had never listened to Tori Amos until I read this (oldish) article about why she is uncool, and then I thought, "Yeah, that sounds like something I would like" and it is!

"_Braveheart_ can be rousing, but more often it’s tedious, gratuitously violent, and filled with distracting modifications to history, like making Longshanks’ son a lisping, effeminate homosexual whose lover the King Of England tosses out the high window of a castle in what the film seems to see as a crowd-pleasing moment."

What's weird is that, when I was 11, I wasn't at all homophobic, but I also didn't question that the natural order of the universe was for people who seemed smart and sensitive to get bullied and thrown out of windows. It wasn't until a few years later that I realized what the full implications were.
After 20 years of avoiding it, our critic finally swallows his hatred of Gibson and sees the No. 81 film on the IMDb 250.

Me, voluntarily revisiting Waterworld for the sake of internet criticism. you're welcome.
Written by Katherine Murray. In 1995, Waterworld was known for being stupid, stupidly expensive, and the first in a series of bad decisions that hurt Kevin Costner's career — its reputation hasn't changed a lot since then. Still, if I'm honest with you, the movie didn't bother me that much when ...

"What is the name of this young lady who was born inside a vegetable? Her name, of course, is Zucchettina."
We take a stroll through just a little of the cultural history of Cinderella, the shoe-wearing, prince-finding, stepmother-vexing heroine who's been around for hundreds of years — at least.

Me, trying really hard to talk about Coherence without mentioning anything that happens in Coherence.
Written by Katherine Murray. Coherence is a triumph of low-budget filmmaking, a reality show about an extreme acting challenge, a disturbing science fiction take on human nature and identity, a fascinating puzzle box, and a movie with a well-written, well-acted female lead.

"It was the most romantic thing he had ever done besides asking a bunch of adults if he could officially call Julie his girlfriend, and the gesture made her bold." Awesome short story by Kathleen Hale.
It was the only sin that Julie had ever prearranged in her entire life.

It's tricky to say whether this could be worse than the fourth one.
We’re guessing Michael Bolton is really excited by this news.
