I did a little research after I saw your post. I found this post that talked about the issue: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa365247%28v=vs.85%29.aspx 

It looked like \\?\c: is the key to solving this. Works under cmd.exe but powershell does not like it. I was reminded of another tool that does something like what your script does. so I think I found a solution for you.

There is a tool in the sysinternals suite called accessenum ( http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897332.aspx ). I just tested it with the \\?\c:\ path on my local machine and it appeared to work. Give that a try for fall back on the classic cmd.exe.
