+Jason Morningstar, thanks again for your direction. He is not responsible for my errors, but he is responsible for helping me sound slightly less daft about history:

Was struck recently by how under-appreciated Penguin's umbrella is.

As with many comicbook ideas, it's become a running joke. A Swiss-Army knife of rotating gadgets. The evil analogue to Batman's utility belt. Q branch for a would-be heavy in the rogues' gallery.

But. Today I got to thinking of ol' Oswald as the feral demon masquerading as a stand-up citizen. And for someone like that, at once dressed up like a trying-too-hard gentleman, yet with an unassuming stature, what better weapon than a disguised gun?

Imagine the mayor murdered by a single bullet in the midst of a crowded rally. Imagine a mob don destroyed while rushing between car and restaurant in the rain. And no one would ever know. No one would even suspect.

I mean - damn...

Any WWI nerds out there want to help me with a very specific question?

I'm trying to determine the most likely scenario by which an English pilot in the Ottoman Campaign might be flying solo, deep into uncharted desert. I assume it would be a reconnaissance plane, rather than a fighter - but then again, why would he be on reconnaissance in the middle of nowhere? I'm also assuming this would be later in the war. Probably no earlier than 1917.

Appreciate any ideas! Thanks.

There's just so much about this image that encapsulates the Batman movie (or TV series) I would make. Well done, Wiesenfeld.

GANG: Something to take your mind off politics for a moment:

What is the technical name for the phenomenon of the character of a specific place being imbued with and sort of reenacting its history, over and over? E.g., places of great wars continuing in war for different reasons, ages later, or holy sites being used for meditation today without prior knowledge of their sacred history?
