The Biscuit Lover's Guide to Broadband

If I buy a packet of 12 biscuits and put them in the empty tin, I have 12 biscuits.
If I eat 4 biscuits, I have two thirds of the biscuits still available.
If I ask my daughter to bring me some biscuits I know that there’s a good chance one or two might go missing in transit!
It is possible that I may not get my expected proportion of the available biscuits.
I still know how many biscuits were in the tin though.
That, dear BT Broadband support engineer, is why the downline and upline speed as registered on the hub of our router has nothing whatsoever to do with whether I have a wireless (my daughter) or wired (me) connection to the hub.
Furthermore, what you claim to be the expected speed is governed by the speed automatically set by the ADSL system (and reported on the hub). This responds to the slightest error and reduces the “expected” speed. When you are a long way from the exchange (a “long line”), transient errors are commonplace but have no bearing on the speed that is possible as governed by the signal to noise ratio (SNR) of the line.
What ADSL is doing is the same as a biscuit manufacturer who reduces the number of biscuits in the packet because the top one sometimes gets broken.
A simple request for the ADSL headline speed to be reset (SNR renegotiation) should not entail a 45 minute phone call.

Negotiation is an important life skill which we need to share with our children.  h/t +Lauren Hug
My upcoming book has two chapters devoted to helping women negotiate effectively. Interestingly, many women only have difficulty with negotiating on their own behalf. They're pretty spectacular at negotiating on behalf of others.
