Няма такава държава...
Monday was the first day of school in this country. In the capital Sofia it was cold and it was pouring rain. It was rush hour and traffic was further aggravated because of all the parents driving their children to school. The worst time for a traffic light to break down, which is exactly what happened at one of the busiest crossings, known as "the five corners".

Then, something unexpected happened. A young man walked into the street, stood in the middle of the crossing and started regulating traffic. He was not a traffic policeman, he just genuinely wanted to help. So he stood there and did a good deed. In the pouring rain.

The first few minutes drivers were cussing at him, yelling at him to get off the street and basically mentioning his mother in ungentlemanly fashion. But as everyone saw that he was really only trying to help, all of the drivers started following his instructions and traffic proceeded smoothly.

It took an hour for the traffic police to finally send a uniformed traffic controller. Imagine if there was no one there to regulate traffic for a whole hour. In rush hour.

A young girl was passing by while this was taking place. She took a picture and posted it, along with the story, on facebook. It went viral. In just a few hours every Bulgarian on facebook knew the name of Kosta Krastev and what he did. People (myself included) were praising him for stepping up and doing the right thing.

Three days later he got a letter from the traffic police. He was fined 150 Euro.

We have a saying in this country: "Do good - eat shit." I assume that it's unique only to my country. I would imagine that if this had happened anywhere else in the world, this young guy would be getting a 150 Euro reward, and not a fine. But by the same token, if this had happened anywhere else, it wouldn't take traffic police an hour to get there.

The media and people on social networks have rallied around the guy. I imagine that the traffic police would be forced to rescind the fine or if they don't - people on social media would help him with the fine - 150 Euro is about 50% of the average monthly salary in this country and Kosta is unemployed. But the silver lining is that Kosta has already been contacted by at least one recruitment agency and he has been offered a job.
