Beautiful building, second-class rooms, poor service. I got a room facing the street. The traffic noise was pretty bad as I went to sleep, but I was too tired to call the desk to ask to change it. By 5 a.m., I'd slept four hours and it was too loud to take. Trucks, cars, buses downshifting. Very loud. At 5:45 a.m. I called the front desk and asked if they could change my room. The person answering the phone audibly sighed in exasperation at my request. No, she said, she couldn't change the room because, "I don't know which rooms are in front and which are in back. I'm just the night auditor." I asked if there was anyone else on duty, and she said no. "You'll have to call back at 9.a.m.," she told me. In addition, the hotel feels like it's half renovated. The building is a gem, but the rooms feel like an afterthought. At the bar, hoping to get something to eat, I waited ten or 15 minutes for someone to even show up working--two other guests who joined me waiting gave up. I've stayed in lots of nice boutique hotels over the years--this isn't one of them.
