Strawberry
Oil on canvas 11" x 14"

#painting   #stilllife   #fineart   Wow  it's been so long since my last post here, not to worry I am painting on a regular basis, went through a spell where I didn't paint very much and lately I have painted short demos so I haven't had much to post.

This was a little tricky, never painted a strawberry before, after many failed attempts, turns out I had to create it by painting a base layer then let it dry before adding the finer details. Anyway all is good.

Enjoy,
Dave

How is everyone, back in the studio after 2 recent art festivals. The Buckhorn Fine Arts Festival and the Kawartha Arts Festival, both great events for me lots of accolades and inquiries about holding workshops and and even a few sales, always good to see a painting I struggle with, loved by someone enough to pay money to have it in their home to enjoy on a daily basis.

Here is my latest, Collective: Oil on canvas 20" x 16". Pretty close to what my initial idea when I started, made a few tweaks here and there but overall I am happy with this one.

Have a great day

Hi, sorry it's been a while since I posted, last weekend was the Buckhorn Fine Arts Festival, a great event for me, met many great artists and even sold a painting, Stripes is found a forever home. I had quite a few people who inquired about holding workshops, so all in all a great experience for me. This coming weekend I will be doing another festival in the Kawarthas, in Fenelon falls, the Kawarthas Fine Arts Show, I will post more details soon, this was a last minute decision that's why I haven't mentioned it before.

Talk at you soon

Socket: Oil on 16" x 12" wrapped canvas $400

I posted a wip a few days ago, but had to wait for the painting to dry out enough to get a good photo of it. I like the idea of taking objects that you might not expect to see in a traditional still life,  look for me to expand on this idea a little. Most of the painting has a great warmth to it, so for my little socket and what ever you call the thing with the elbow, I decided I would try and paint them using cooler colors. My hope was that the difference in temperature and contrast against everything else would help to bring focus to this area. I know the rule of warm colors come forward and cool colors recede but that isn't always true.

Enjoy, comment welcome

Hey again, while I wait for my last painting to dry, here is something I have also been working on, this is an exercise in composition, while reading Richard Shmids book Alla Prima 2 he talks about composition, and how it is hard to define, and how sometimes it works and sometimes not. Anyway that got me thinking, so I decided to explore this a little. I have always been told never split the canva in half and never place you main focus in the center of the canvas, so that is exactly what I did with this one. Personally I think this could work, how about you?

Thoughts? Let me know what you think.

Hey so I am putting the finishing touches on this one, hard to get a great shot on my easel, but hopefully you get the idea, some of my darks are pretty flat so won't show well until I get this one varnished, but before I do any thoughts or perhaps a suggestion or two. I really like my use of color in this one.

enjoy,
Dave

Hey long time since I made a post, hope everyone is doing great. As I build my art career I have a full time job usually I work about 4 days a week but the last few weeks it has been considerably more so I haven't had a great deal of time in front of the easel, this week things have settled down a bit so I did sneak in some time to paint this.

Brass Bell: Oil on 16" x 12" canvas

This little bell is usually lurking in many of my paintings, usually in the background or the shadows, but thought I would put it centre stage this time. I don't know if you noticed but my brush strokes are getting a little swirly.

Enjoy,
Dave
