Thinking of working this up into a little mini poster for my desk. Or a cross stitch pattern. Not sure which yet...

I wasn't going to start this early in the year, but I'm officially open for commission work (illustration, crochet monsters, etc); email me for pricing; http://goetzworks.com/contact/

Anyone currently on my wait list (Hi Scott!) will have their pieces by midnight (PST), Saturday.

Our landlord took one look at the blackberry bushes creeping up the back yard, scratched his chin and asked how we liked the idea of keeping goats come spring.

Goats. Our landlord said we could have goats.

OUR LANDLORD SAID WE COULD HAVE GOATS.

As I work out the best way to get my tea tree through winter, I've started reconsidering my container garden plans for next year. I'll start some favorite seeds early and in greater abundance, I'll plant some flowers just because, and absolutely plant more cilantro.

Can anyone recommend a good book for a relatively new gardener that doesn't need a lot of hand-holding? I'd be much obliged.

NGC 6543, The Cat's Eye Nebula   |   Judy Schmidt

The elegant, delicate Cat's Eye is one of the most processed nebulas in the archive. With that in mind, the data was surprisingly a pain to get, being apparently available only as exposures and requiring a DADS request. It was strangely clean for uncombined images, though, and I suspect something got misplaced somewhere along the line.

Anyway, I decided I didn't want to go overboard on the processing. The concentric rings are meant to be faint. Intricate knots of Hα are highlighted and sharpened in red and yellow while OIII glows brightly in blue, my favorite colors for both of those filters.

I do wish I understood the nuances of the filters better. Both f656n and f658n are listed as Hα and I somehow managed to put the longer wavelength in the green channel instead of the red but it seems to look good like that anyway. Or maybe I mislabeled it. The data was kind of a mess.

It should be noted that a lot of the nebula is only visible in a wider field. This is only the inner portion or iris of the Cat's Eye.
